Afte a year's hiatus, I'm looking forward to getting back into the macro game, but it's tough. Practice is everything, and it's been a while since I REALLY FOCUSED (pun intended) on macro. Even setting up the diffused speedlite raises questions now. Should I use the shortest setting for manual (24mm), or the longest (105mm).......and using or NOT using the Raynox - for some subjects they're just too big, for others it's the perfect enhancement. LOL - The best approach, of course, is to NEVER STOP taking macros. Just add in other things as a little diversion. :)
And some of you guys keep raising the bar........... but THAT'S what makes the macro board the best board on UHH.
Everyone is willing and anxious to help when one needs advice.
I'm REALLY looking forward to getting back 'in the game'.
The WIDEST speedlight pattern is best for macro-illumination.
With both my Nikon SB-600 and Nissin Bi866, the speedlights AUTOMATICALLY select widest coverage when the drop-down diffuse is in front of the speedlight lens, in either auto or manual modes.

So that would be 24mm?
Yes. Under conventional use, that indicates the light pattern matches a 24-mm lens on camera.

Thanks Douglass. I've been getting 'adequate' results, but I've been VERY impressed with some here who seem to have overcome the 'hot spot' issue that often plagues macros when there is a shiny surface as part of the subject. I still struggle with that.

Make sure that
1.) Speedlight clear plastic, Fresnel diffuser is in drop-down position;
2.) INTERNAL white cloth diffuser is stretched from left to right INSIDE softbox; and
3.) that softbox is NOT collapsed at all, not even a little. Here is an "How To Fix" UHH thread:

Are you still using the same rig as on page 4 of the Macro set-ups?
