I'm interested in buying a great wide angle zoom lens for my Canon 5d mark II. Wanting it to shoot landscapes both daylight and night. Recommendations please

Wide angle zoom for day and night landscapes? This might do the trick:

For cheap money - Tamron SP 20-40 f2.7-3.5 about $200 used most places. There are plenty of new lenses out there that go to $2500 and you will hear about all of them .......The latest Canons being utimately, the best.

I tend to support the Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8L USM lens. I use this lens for all my ultra wide angle shots. This lens is my "go to" lens for my realestate shots. I also take it with me on vacations and some landscape shootings. I use all of my lenses in some sort of professional capacity, so I'm not looking for "cheap". You'll usually get cheap results when looking only for "cheap". You may also want to look into a wide angle prime, if you don't think you can zoom with your feet. Of course you may find yourself in a ultra wide angle narrow moat, like in Venice, Italy. You can only back up until your in the canal.

I agree. I have this lens and love it.

If you don't want to use a tripod, then 'night' would point you toward one of the 16-35mm f/2.8L models. Then again, the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM gives some hand holding options. I'd also look at the prices and give some serious thought to the EF 24mm f/1.4L II rather than a zoom.

Not sure if the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 is crop sensor only but I have this on my Canon 60D a lot. Has occasional lens flare that won't be a problem at night. Others have made suggestions in past threads about the reasonably new Canon 10-18mm f/3.5 -5.6 lens.

I own this lens and really enjoy, but the best results start at f/8 out to f/11 (or down to as the case may be ...) Shooting that slowly in lowlight may not be an option even with a tripod where the 24L at f/2 is sharp through the entire frame, but double the price as compared to the 17-40 ... There are clearly several options available.

If the 16-35 is too expensive for you, try the 17-40 which I use to fine results.
