Chigger- Trombicula alfreddugesi

thats what the NWF Field guide to insects and spiders of N. America page 415 led me to believe, also called Red Bug, harvest mite
1/16"

From your own cited article: "Chiggers are actually mites, cousins of spiders and ticks." The younger the chigger nymph, the more closely it resembles similar mites.
