I'm using the D750 and a new Sigma 150-600S. I noticed I hear clicking coming from the lens when I'm shooting in AFC mode. That's AI Servo for you Canon peeps.

I don't hear it when in AFS.

Also on Saturday 4/25 The sound freaked out it became EXTREMELY LOUD and the focus became totally erratic....
Sunday 4/26 all seemed "normal"...back to the "normal" clicking sound.

Is this clicking while tracking moving subjects "normal"?

Thanks all!

Can you try it on another camera?
Do other lens do the same thing?

I don't have access to another Nikon camera. I'll try another lens on it.

Does the lens contain the AF motor? Or is it the camera body's responsibility?

Anyone know?

I've have something similar occur with my Nikon 80-400mm lens when the camera is in AF-C mode. The focusing would continue to hunt - jumping back and forth quickly. I don't know if that's what was happening with your lens. When the camera is in AF-S mode it becomes rock steady. The only time I would have my camera in AF-C mode is when it's also in 3D tracking mode.

Yah...the lens did that too...But the weird thing is I shot it all day Sunday and not a problem from it.

What did you do with your lens?

Send me the lens and I'll test it on one of my 810s.

I have the sigma 150-500 and always get the clicking when the lens is trying to maintain focus and not for one shot AF. I think it is a sigma trait and nothing to worry about other than the annoyance.

Some times yes. Some times no. The quiet clicking is always present when AF is tracking.

I'm a Canon shooter and hear it too with my Tamron 70-300mm occasionally when it is set to A1 Focus & almost continually at A1 Servo. As I understand it the difference is that in the Servo mode it is constantly refocusing, but in A1 Focus it only changes if the subject moves. I'm assuming it's normal as I've had the lens for over a year.

I hope so. I'll be calling Sigma in a few hours to see what they think.

How do you like your Tamron 70-300? I want something light with good reach for butterflying. Is it sharp at 300?

I don't have any complaints with the lens; it's probably not equal to a Canon L series, but neither is the price. Generally, and just to "play it safe", I tend to use +/- 280mm as the max, but would have no hesitation to push it to 300. I'm using a crop sensor camera and the lens is designed for a full sensor camera so I pick up some extra magnification (I think it is a factor of about 1.3 but I don't even think about it.

I try to use a rather fast shutter speed (1/500 min, usually higher) and very seldom use a tripod. The wide open f/ stop is f4.0-5.6 which some Hoggers object to, so if I'm seldom shooting in low light, I push up the ISO to maintain the ss.

I didn't do anything with the lens. Donkas1946 and JCam describe this occurring with their camera and lens also. I've never had that occur when the camera is in AF-C and 3D-tracking mode. All of the focus points are used to track the same subject.

I spoke to a rep from Sigma today and he assured me that the clicking is a normal function of the lens when it is tracking and continuously focusing.

The warranty is 3 years so I'll have time to determine if there is a problem. ;)
