I love Lightroom, but I find it painfully slow. I would like to trial ACDC. Do you know if you can run both programs, without it messing up your file structure? I have things exactly the way I want them in Lightroom as far as being able to find any photo, so I want to be sure that a trial of another software won't do anything to destroy my Lightroom catalog. Thanks!

If you find it slow, then I would question you computer, speed, memory, # of processors. etc. I have an 8 gig laptop with a fairly fast processors and it flies right along. If you try ACDC and it is slow, then I look even more at your hardware.

Grandma G,

I hope you took your guru a plate of fresh baked cookies :); he really did you a favor in steering you away from Win8! When I said I hated it, I was being very polite--mixed company ya' know. As we seniors know, newer doesn't always mean better.

Mac, as an obvious veteran of UHH, I am at lose to figure how someone with four years of participation, and 4545 cmunications could be so unaware. Have some faith in your friends here. Lightroom is an amazingly creative, as well as a fabulously inexpensive tool. A real deal. Try it.

I manage the file system for my photos. Then I allow Lightroom to point to them. I download my files from my CF or SD cards into a folder which I have created reflecting the specific shoot. When that's done and I am happy I import to lightroom. Most all my files are on 4 external hard drives and I know what files are where. I don't let Lightroom manage my system.

David this circular. You don't let LR manage your pic yet you do. In effect, once you import, it is in LR and have all the functions available. You're in the prison system and have an id. :) What function are you not using such that you feel LR is not managing?

At best I would guess you dump your photos into a directory that you name on what ever device you want and then use LR to import. Am I close?

I am a couple days behind on this thread, so bear with me. I signed up for the $10/mo PS/LR package and started using Lightroom for basic post-editing functions that were covered in Nikon, Picasa and Gimp. I found that LR was a far more reaching program than any of the other mentioned. Six of my favorite flower photos are now proudly displayed in my house--all done with LR. I have since forced myself to devote time to learn new features on both PS and LR, just as I would learn to practice photography. There are many facets to any program and you just have to sit still and learn them. It's also only $10/month and you can spend that much in two visits to your favorite coffee shop lol

Lots of videos on youtube. I like Anthony Morganti's set. Relative shorts chunks - mostly develop module

I am new to UHH as a member. Joined today. Was looking for groups to follow and Lightroom interest me as I have used it for about 8 years. Now on version 6. Noticed you have a lot of good replies and I agree that Lightroom is a great product. The difficult thing is buying into the concept of using Lightroom and staying out of the actual directories.
As others have mentioned, the learning curve is steep. There are a number of resources available, not the least of which is Adobe. You might also check out Classroom in a book.
There are also the forums here. A good question will get you information overload. :)
