I have just purchased a Nikkor AF-S 80-400mm lens and am considering using this from time to time with either the Nikon TC-14E II or TC-14E III teleconverter. I am wondering if it is physically possible to use either of the teleconverters with this lens and if anyone has any experience of this combination.

Depending on exactly what camera body you are using, you may be better off cropping and using well applied pixel enlargement - no physicalities to contend with and you do not loose 1 stop of light.

I am not a Nikon expert, but I do know the Tamron SP 1.4X may be a better solution than the Nikon TC ....if you must use a TC.

I have a question. Considering the cost of a lens that would deliver the shot at the magnification the tele gives, in places where light levels are of no consequense (open water, desert climates, etc.), arent they a practical alternative if they produce a same quality photo file? I dont know the answer and I'm not being critical, I just wish to know. Thanks

Sorry, I do not completely understand your question .....

The TC-14E III is compatible with AF-S 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens. The next question is, is the combination compatible with your camera. You can find a compatibility chart on the NikonUSA web site or on B&H. The chart will also tell you about the TC-14E II.

I'm asking if a high quality teleconveter used in adequate light would not be equivalent to a lense of the same focal length but lighter (in weight) and somewhat cheaper than longer lense only, if the files (pictures) it produces are the same?

That's a good question. I think in the situations you describe--where light levels are of no consequence AND aperture limitations are not also of no consequence, it is a very practical alternative.

Yes, of course .....IF - you have a TC that physically fits your lens and camera body. The TC will also slow your AF speed slightly - If AF speed matters.

On the other hand, if you use something like Clear Image Zoom pixel enlargement - as used in Sony camera bodies - there are no physical issues, no light loss issues and no AF speed issues.

What was being suggested was a Nikon tele with a Nikon lens and body, all compatible, the program feature you mention in sony cameras sort of makes it all moot. lol Thanks

Thank you for your response. I have had a look at the chart and these items are compatible, together with the D800 I use.

Depending on the f-stop of your lens and your particular camera body - you may lose ALL AF with the addition of an optical TC !

The D800 is a GOOD candidate for cropping ....
