How sharp/good is the Nikon 18 -300 3.5 5.6 lens. I am thinking of making it my main every day lens
What are you putting it on ??

It's ok through 150, not great as you get to 300. Better option all around is the 18-200. Though still a bit soft, you can still use it at 200, and it is sharper than the 18-300 at 200mm.
Cameras with higher pixel density will reveal any lens's flaws more than lower mp cameras.

The 18-140mm f3.5-5.6 receives positive reviews, I like mine.

I have a Nikon 7100 that I am will be using it with. I am replacing the Nikon 18 - 105 that came with the camera.
The reviews that I've seen indicate that it's a good all-in-one lens. There are two versions. One is an f/3.5-5.6 and the other is f/3.5-6.3. The f/3.5-5.6 is much heavier.
I have a Sigma 18-300 that I'm very happy with. It costs $579 compare to almost $1000 for the Nikons. I would give it serious consideration.
I looked into it as well and ended up happy on my D7200 with the Sigma 18-300 and a little more money in my wallet for the next GAS attack. It's good for an all around lens and is pretty sharp out to about 250mm.
How good this lens is will depend entirely on you. If you practice good focusing techniques, e.g. using a tripod, monopod or Puffin Pad, the lens will be a very good performer even out at 300mm.
If convenience is important to you, this lens is superb -- it is extremely versatile.
But, if you shoot a lot of lens charts and obsess about lab tests you will not be happy. It is very slightly, almost imperceptibly, softer than a few other lenses when considered objectively.
There are two versions -- the older version which is f5.6 and a newer version which is f6.3. The older is a little hefty but focuses quicker. The weight factor is something you should assess.
I know of professionals who prize the Nikon 18-300mm because it delivers quality and so conveniently. One in fact has one of his images, shot with the older version, used as a billboard for a major company.
In practical terms this is a very good lens.
