Facial Recognition in Lightroom CC

I am looking at the new features in CC and I started with facial recognition. Very cool. It went through all 15,000 pictures in a very reasonable amount of time and grouped all the faces into the people LR thought it would be. It also matched pictures of my daughters now in their 20's with pictures when they were 5 or so (even in Halloween costumes!!). It also matches pet faces!!! It looks like LR recommends who it is and then asks for approval and it learns along the process so it gets better. Then once OK is clicked, it will add that name to keywording.

The process isn't perfect and you have to approve or decline all these matches which looks like it could take quite a long time for 15,000 pictures. In many cases you are approving larger groups but you still have to look at each image to do it right. You can however select many pictures at once using the control or shift keys to highlight as you can anywhere else in Lightroom (You probably can also use the spray can but I haven't tried that yet).

Now for my question, is there any advantage to doing this or should I just start doing it from here on out. I guess another option is to do some of them for each important person so that in the future it will recognized these people and keyword them. My problem is that I don't completely understand all the things facial recognition does for me other than putting the person in keywording faster than previous methods (and maybe that is all it does). Since all of the people in my 15,000 pictures are already keyworded and in collections, I think I might not have to get so OCD with all the faces.

Any thoughts on the subject from others who have played with it would be helpful.

I'm not sure the Facial Recognition in LR is a feature that I want, let alone need. I may change my mind, but it seems like a "gee-whiz", rather than a "how did I ever get along without this" kind of feature.

My primary concern, however, is that some nefarious soul would get access to the photo with the names of those in the image. With that, the potential for bad things ramps up.

So, I do not plan to utilize the Facial Recognition feature, regardless of how cool it is.

Just got my LR CC yesterday and am looking forward to the FR and the other kewl tools. However, your question has merit, my collection has over 100K photos so I think a moving forward approach is prudent and maybe on Saturday mornings with a hot cuppa joe I can highlight a single year and have at'er. While my collection is all keyworded I see a huge benefit to FR as the keywords are generic and based on the individual event. So at a birthday party all the grand kids names are keyworded even though each GK is not in every photo. Once FR is finished I can then create a life story book for every GK. Maybe give to them on their 21 birthday, wedding, or some important date.

I watched Julienne Kost's video on FR. Helped me a lot. Since I have my catalog set up by year, I am doing a year at a time using her time saving techniques. It is much more manageable and easier than doing the whole 15,000. Since I do a lot of family documentation photography and I have a large family, this is a valuable tool for me.

I can also recommend Laura Shoe's 2 excellent videos on FR. The first covers Detecting and Tagging, the second Organizing and Finding. They are free as are her videos on the other new features in LR CC.

Thanks, more detailed than Julieanne Kost's. For me, this will be a very valuable and time saving feature. I think she also answered my question that I don't have to do my whole catalog. I let it find all the faces in the entire catalog but I only have to do a year or two in the folders part to get most of the faces into the database for future recognition.
