I think there may be a resentment in that area of the way that residents are portrayed in movies, TV, etc. It is politically-incorrect to portray almost any ethnic or geographic group in a bad way. Except for rural Southerners, who are routinely pictured as idiotic monsters in many movies and shows. For example, the genre of airheaded college girls being stalked/abused at their cabin. It's always white southerners as bad guys.
In addition to possible anger at sneering outsiders there was also the issue that the photographers were dressed as "dirtbags," another issue that might have caused suspicion.
