The Lightroom 5.7.1 app is still on my desktop and I can open it, however I cannot open the new version of Lightroom.
There is a new icon on my desktop and called Adobe Lightroom, and in my programs there is Adobe Lightroom. Neither will launch when clicked.
In the Adobe CC desktop app, it says I have successfully installed Lightroom CC (2015).
I gave up trying to find a way to contact Adobe.
Anyone have an idea what is going on?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Go to applications and try to start it from there rather than the desktop icon.

log out of the creative cloud and log back in.

This is the solution, but if you run into trouble say so, it Worked out a little differently for me on two different machines.

This worked for me. Seems like a step that should/could be unnecessary, but .......

Yes, that worked. Thanks very much for you assistance. Previous Lightroom upgrades did not present any issues, so I was perplexed about the latest upgrade.
One another question.....should I delete the Lightroom 5.7.1 desktop icon?

If you think you may forget and click on it, I'd get rid of it or hide it. I kept my old version because I bought it, back before I subscribed to CC, but hid it to keep from confusing myself.

I think I can rename it as a reminder if it would be better not to delete it.

Opinions differ. Some people want it totally deleted, others want to hold on to it. I am a holder. Your choice. Doesn't seem to have any effect on performance.
Reading an earlier thread I had anticipated some trouble installing or opening the new LR CC but found I had no trouble at all. I have an 8 year old Mac but there were no issues. I see that the older LR 5 stays on the computer so the new one does not overwrite it. The icon in my tray still opened the old version so I went to applications and found the new LR which I opened from there. After that was done I dragged the existing LR icon from the tray to my Desktop where it disappeared in the usual cloud of smoke. I then dragged the new opened LR icon into the old position in the tray. Update successful!
I chose to delete the old LR 5.

Don't just delete the icon! If you don't want to use 5.7 any longer, go through the process of uninstalling it. On Windows, go to the Control Panel|Programs to do so.
So far nothing has worked. Sigh-
Thanks for adding this link. The quick simple "fixes" haven't worked for my Mac so when I am less frustrated I will dive into this.
