I just upgraded my Lightroom 5 (the monthly plan) to Lightroom CC. Now I have two light rooms! Both contain all my photos. Should I delete the older Lightroom 5?

No. If you ever let your subscription lapse, you will still have LR5. Keep it!

You may not be able to revert to the older catalog from the Lightroom 6 catalog, so you would need to reimport your images and your edits & history would disappear.
Besides, if the subscription lapses he loses both Lightroom 6 & Lightroom 5....based on what his note said.

Interesting. I have LR5 (bought). So if I go to CC then I should keep lr5 and also import photos into cc?

I kept my old LR 5, and just left it on my computer, but upgraded the catalog for LRCC. I will only use LRCC, unless I for some reason unsubscribe to CC and want my old LR back.

Having watched the Creative Live episode yesterday, it appears that when you open the new LR it will ask you to update whatever catalog you have opened, BUT will leave your previous catalog alone. That is what I heard - may have no relation to reality. I need to download the CC version and try it with a non-important catalog.

Yes, it does copy your old catalog then convert the newly copied catalog for Lightroom CC.
The problem arises, if you go for a year or so are you going to import your images into both Lightroom CC AND Lightroom 5? If not, and your subscription lapses, how will you get at your images and edits? Of course your images will be on your disk, but your history and edits are stored in a catalog that will not work with Lightroom 5 supposedly.
So, back to square 1 with reimporting and starting from scratch with edits right?
Not sure relying on Lightroom 5 is a great plan ;) But perhaps I am wrong.

We are just holding the software itself. I know I'm not trying to keep the old catalog current. But if I decided to revert, I'd have to do some shenanigans to get the photos I'd added brought back over. Still, Id rather do that than work eternally with the crippled LR you're left with if you leave CC. I've kept CS 5 too, would rather have them and not need them than need them and not have them. So far I'm happy with CC but never entirely sure about future.
Both versions work now.
Ugh. More confused than ever
Another one of Adobe's marketing schemes with intent to keep users dependent upon continual upgrading and staying on the pay-forever list. They made internal changes to Photoshop menu coding in a recent CC "upgrade" which has caused problems with those plug-ins that rely on the old menu programming language, now they're creating changes in LR that will cause issues with the older format and editing changes.
It is instructive to note that little if anything has been accomplished for users with these changes, just change for the sake of change in favor of control of the upgrade path. Enjoy!
Yes, it's me again, Martha, still loving my long-ago paid-for CS6 which I've been using rent-free for the past couple of years.

I just purchased CC yesterday. I own LR 5 and elements 12. CC automatically updated my LR catalog without any input from myself (I may have had to OK it) so I am all good to go. I am keeping LR 5 but taking the icon off the desktop. Later though, any new pictures I import in LR CC, will not be in the older LR 5 catalog so I would have to import those into LR 5 if I ever went back to it (like maybe after a nuclear holocaust or zombie apocalypse).

Hey - it is fine to stay with the older version, but your characterization of software you admittedly do not own is incorrect. There are newer features that are superb. For LR users, the new versions have some significant new or upgraded features.

Both do not "contain" all your photos. They just each have catalogs that reference them. When you uninstall Lightroom 5 do not assume you can delete your photographs too. They are NOT duplicates.
