I've known people that have gone to the best restaurants and got the same thing.
Food poisoning can happen anywhere, home, deli, restaurants, friends home.
Botulism, I believe can only grow/ exist in a vacuum.
So just about any vacuum packed food can be a source of botulism.
two biggies are:
Canned tomatoes. ( the big one, bulging cans a dead give away )
Vacuum packed bacon .

I am impressed, bvm!
Clostridium botulinum is a strict anaerobe. Oxygen is a poison for this organism. So one correction, if I may, a vacuum, alone, won't get it, as the environment has to be totally without oxygen or made acid to prevent growth. Boiling in water does not get rid of all oxygen.
I can tomatoes from my garden, but I make sure the tomatoes are washed and pealed, and that the canning containers contain acid, (1 TBsp of concentrated lemon juice per quart) as the growth of the organism is blocked under acid conditions. And I process under boiling water conditions.
And yes, so right you are, you don't have to go to church/synagogue/mosque, etc. to get botulism, a most horrible disease.

I can remember my mother saying don't buy "bloated" cans or dented ones either.
I think vacuum packed food have the highest incidence of the bacteria.
Too bad they don't have a course in grammar and high schools, on food pathogens, contamination's, and just plain germs.
Food preparation methods are a lot of the problem.
Kitchen hygiene, personal hygiene and utensil hygiene are paramount.
Look what just happened to Blue Bell Ice Cream. I think their action was wise but it will take a lot of time to rebuild their reputation.
When in doubt, throw it out.

I have always wondered how I and my Family and Friends have missed contracting this deadly food Poisoning...
Ever Since I was born (my momma told me) we have had a "Family Reunion" at the Local (where ever local was at the time) Park..once a year. Everybody bring your favorite Food.. Potato Salad, Slaw, Fried Chicken, Cake, Pie, Various raw and cooked vegatables.... Eat at noon, cover left over food after noon meal, go play softball or Horseshoes, come back, uncover food, finish it off and go home...
as far as I know, nobody has ever gotten deadly sick...OF course some pigs like myself, might have overdone the Pecan Pie... but no deaths or hospitals....
What has happened...??

I love that pecan pie!
Regarding, "what has happened?" Some say they have never had poison ivy. Like they say, and it may apply here, there are two kinds of people, those who have had poison ivy and those who will get poison ivy. lol.

Those were the days of really large ice-filled coolers.
Two men, usually fathers, uncles, husband or sons would lug them over into the shade.
I suspect it had something to do with the Fugu casserole.
