A couple of weeks ago someone mentioned a combo monopod/walking stick for hiking. Lately I find that I am having trouble holding my Sony RX10 still out in the woods and this may be what I need. Is the Mefoto a good one? Anyone have one lighter or one they are thrilled with? Am also thinking of switching back to my Canon SX50 for hiking…that RX10 is getting to be a boat anchor!

I use an Oben carbon fiber monopod, they make either a 4 or 5 section model (the 5 section collapses down smaller). There is a retractable steel spike in the foot which comes in handy when you use it as a walking stick. I use a 4 section one, it works well for both purposes.

One of my son's bought me a Sunpak tripod and collapsible monopod from Best Buy a year or so ago. Myself, my wife and my son have all three used the monopod as a temporary walking stick, and I have found it extremely useful in the woods and hills to give the extra little help I need to keep the camera steady.

On a side note - the bolt that screws into the bottom of your camera to attach it to a monopod or tripod is a standard 1/4 X 20 bolt that you can find in numerous lengths in any hardware store. If you were to take one of those sturdy wooden walking sticks you frequently see around, you could have someone help you flatten the top, then drill a hole in the top for that 1/4 X 20 bolt and epoxy it into the hole. That will give you a very sturdy staff that will serve dual purpose as a monopod (just as an idea).

I wasn't a UHH member when I bought this on. So I didn't know about all the fancy ones out there. I just bought mine a Wally world. and have had it ever since. Had to get to more so my wife could use them as walking sticks.

The post was from Davethehiker and his zero gravity tripod I think. Here's the link, it's worth reading. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-298310-1.html

The poles are made by Leki and there is an adapter kit. http://www.amazon.com/LEKI-Aergon-Photoadapter-Camera-Mount/dp/B00CHJ6QY6

Clever idea.

I have the MeFoto monopod and would buy it again. If I could find a carbon fiber monopod for not much more, I'd go with it for the difference in weight. B&H carries MeFoto. I purchased mine at a camera store here in Columbus.

I second the Oben tripod. I use the Oben 2500 and love it!

Oh, my, so many choices and options…and I want to pick the best one for my needs. I need lightweight for sure, and one that allows me to shoot flowers close to the ground. Thanks you all so much for your suggestions…I'm liking the Oben and MeFoto…a monopod is going to be the answer…as a hiker I want fast access without having to set up the tripod and/or carry it. At 75 years old, I also need the trekking pole feature!

I just looked at the page you linked and am thinking of getting this monopod. Do you use either the Oben-QRA-R2 quick release or the Oben VH-R2 tilt head with it?

A quick release would be ideal...

I actually use a Manfrotto 234RC, I prefer the safety lock on it, it seems more secure to me, but the Oben VH-R2 is similar in size.
