Ebay - It's Usually Excellent, But...

I sold my D610 on ebay, sort of. When I contacted the winner, he said that he thought he was outbid. His name was at the top of the list, but he still wasn't sure. I'm working for the next eight days, so it's hard for me to deal with this in a timely manner. He finally accepted that he was the winner, but he wants me to take a picture to verify the shutter count. The camera is packed neatly in the Nikon box, inside another box, and inside the mailing box. I'm not unpacking everything. So, he would like me to send him the last picture I took. I'll have to find that tonight when I get home from work. He also wants to know if I can send it to the Czech Republic!

This is going to drag out for days, but I've never had an experience quite like this on ebay - after 463 transactions. On two occasions, people did not pay, so I had to relist or sell to the next bidder in line.

I know it won't help in every instance, but when I sell on EBAY it is to US only. No overseas shipping/hassles to worry about.

Selling a camera, I would have obtained the shutter count prior to packing and listed it right in the description along with sample pics.

The biding rules state clearly, if you bid you will pay - if he keeps questioning it report him. He has 3 days to pay isn't it?

Approach with extreme caution. Sometimes people that are hard to get along with are the ones that make a false claim against you with Ebay saying you sent an empty package. It has happened more than once.

Send it to the Czech republic?! NEVER! A lot of Eastern European countries have very unreliable mail service and also in some of those countries mail inspectors will open the package and keep whatever is inside. Believe it or not, some Ebayers will not ship to Italy or France either.

My feeling is that you are about to lose money and open up a lot of grief for youself. I haven't sold anything on Ebay lately, but when I do I put into the description that I will send to USA only, and I put it in red letters. All caps.

I only ship to the USA because of some problems that arose in the past. Also, it takes a lot of time at the P.O.
I would relist and give bad feed back, he had all the necessary information when he bid or he should not have bid.

Yes, I specify USA only. I don't know where this buyer is, but he says he has USA address I could use.
Yes, I did list the shutter count.
No, they do not have to pay. They are obligated to pay, but no one from ebay is going to threaten the buyer with a gun.

Jerry, sorry to hear about this. He knows he was the winner, since ebay let's you know immediately! On the shutter count, well most ask that when the bidding is going on. I bid on that camera, as I was looking for a second body and even asked you before I knew it was on ebay. No problem, just outbid and didn't want to go that high.
There is, I believe, a time limit to pay or you can relist or sell to the next higher bidder. I never ship overseas!
I did sell a lens last year and never heard from the buyer for almost a week. Had it boxed, etc. Finally received a paypal payment. Still never heard anything from this person. I hate people like that!
On your bidder from overseas, the next thing you will hear is; shutter count is higher than I thought, so can you reduce the price and I will send money? Yea, okay, right away!
You did have the shutter count listed and it is up to the bidder to make a decision if that is okay or do they want a photo of the shutter count. I normally do that if there is any questions on a sale. However, just me.
Good luck and please keep us posted. I would have like to have bought that camera! Just saying!

I can't lose money, but I hate this annoyance, especially since I'm not home during the day. If he doesn't pay me tomorrow, I will institute a cancellation with ebay. Then I'll have to list it again. Fortunately, ebay keeps all of the correspondence between buyer and seller, so they can see what has happened.

BUT, until the money is in your paypal account you are not obliged to ship....and once the money is in your paypal account they cannot just get it back.

You should ship to his official paypal / ebay address.... period...

If he balks or does not pay within the time limits, bad feedback and relist. You have not lost anything.

I never ship till PayPal says I have money. I ship Priority Mail, insured, to their confirmed PayPal address. When I get home tonight, I'll send him the last picture I took with the camera and tell him that tomorrow is the deadline for payment.

I'll keep you informed. This isn't a major problem, and I'm not in danger of losing money, but it is annoying, especially since I have a narrow window morning and night to deal with it.

So far the few dealings I have had selling have been good - had one no pay, so just left bad feedback and relisted.

I've sold and brought off of ebay since almost day one and what he's putting you through is pure BS and is more than likely a scam...

Cancel asap and report him....

BTW, this is not ebay's fault ....

Actually, even if the money is in your PayPal account, they can put a hold on the funds or they can withdraw funds from an account you have tied to PayPal as a backup, or they can put a negative balance on your Paypal account, all of which can be a pain. I have an on-line business that utilizes PayPal and I have had all of the above apply at one time or another. It has always worked out for me in the end, when the facts are reviewed by Paypal, but during that process, it's a pain.

I know they can put a hold on the funds, but how do they withdraw them or cause a negative balance? Provided you respond quickly when a problem occurs.
