It is said it will be free for those who have 7 & 8. Of course PC manufactures will get it first. Why do I have this gut feeling that yes it will be downloaded but if you want the disk it will cost you?; and will the disk come from Porto Rico or from China? :?: :?: :?:

I've been using the (free) Tech Preview of Windows 10.

It's everything you hated about Windows 8 and nothing you liked about Windows 7.

And that surprised you? :D

You'd think that after all these years, they could finally get it right.

Y'know, I've always believed in the philosophy, "If it ain't broke...don't fix it."

I was totally confused when they upgraded Office and changed the U.I. several years ago, and now everyone's getting confused with their latest iterations of Windows (8 & 10.)
Why can't they just update and improve Windows and Office without changing the way users are comfortable seeing?

And why can't they address some of the more common complaints and annoyances people mention?

For example, why does Microsoft insist on updating your computer's OS when you're in the process of shutting down? Yikes! I'm about to board a flight and Microsoft thinks I have 10-15 minutes to "not shut down while updating???"

I could go on, but since I'm a Mac user primarily, why bother?

Not only that, but when you restart, it finishes the updating process.

This explains the cost confusion:
http://www.pcgamer.com/microsoft-windows-10-will-not-be-sold-as-a-subscription/

And from Microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/about

Installation of Win 10 - looks like an automatic upgrade to Win7/8
http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/02/02/windows-10-automatic-install/

I could find nothing about buying a DVD with Win10.

I was hoping they would go the way of Apple and give free upgrades.

That's a quite predictable answer. I entered the thread to see what lies in my, after End of Life for W7, future holds. After decades of watching and working with MS, nothing could be otherwise expected.

I seem to recall that every time a new version of Windows is introduced, they say that everyone admitted that the previous version was not very good, but this new one will be great. And MS has been able to maintain that tradition through eight releases.

Given that the only hardware on which you can install OS X (any discussion of a "Hackintosh" is disregarded at this juncture) is produced by Apple, giving away the OS is simply a no-brainer.

Microsoft does not enjoy this closed environment, and thus if they didn't charge for Windows, a major part of their revenue stream would simply (and immediately) dry up.

So, unlike Apple, MS has nothing else to offer the world? :D
