Rather than piggyback on a previous thread, I'm starting a new one.

Educated guesses, please. How will the D7100 be different from the D7000?

What would be nice: The AF from the D300S, increased continuous shoot speed, improved S/N ratio.

Replace the mode dial with ISO and WB buttons like the D300s

The mode dial is perfect, got to keep the U1 and U2 settings! But the mode dial does need a lock on it. ISO and WB buttons are convenient right where they are.

The only thing that comes to mind would be the articulated LCD screen like the D5100.

Great idea! That would help to keep me off the ground.

Mac, just how useful is that articulated screen and how much does it swivel? What are some popular uses for it?

My personal feeling is it will not get the fold out screen. I personally would not want it. I have seen 4 D5100's already with the screen broken off. 2 are still taped on and 2 have been sent for repairs. I don't think the mechanism is quite up to par for the D7000's rugged use intent. Probably why we have yet to see one on any Pro bodies.

I don't know really. I was just throwing that out as a guess. I don't use the LCD for much other than the menu, so it wouldn't be a big selling point for me. MT Shooter mentioned seeing some D5100s with the screen broken off, I hadn't thought of that but I can see how it could happen.

Yea, the screen getting sheared off would be my main concern. I have a 3100 and have no problem with the "fixed" screen. Like you, I only use it for the menu and occasionally reviewing shots. I never use it like a P&S. I always use the viewfinder. Thanks.

Something I would like to see on any new camera: Problem --the dials on both the front and back of my D300, 300s and 90 are easy to roll left or right. When shooting an event like a wedding I have to place a piece of tape across the dial so my settings don't change. This could be handled in three ways that I could think of. 1. Electronically -- there could be a lever on the back of the camera, easily accessed by the thumb -- it would lock or unlock current settings with a flick of the thumb. 2. A little lip just under the dials that would require reaching over the lip to change the dial. 3. A light that would blink in the viewfinder for about three seconds that would indicate a setting change. This could be the new setting blinking or just a little dot blinking. My choice would be the lever, but anything that would help with this problem would be good.

Saw one break 3 weeks ago. The guy had it on a tripod with a 300mm F2.8 lens on it and the screen folded out. It started to snow and he threw his jacket over it and there was a distinct SNAP. Looked under the jacket and the screen was hanging by wires, not good. He actually laughed and said, "Looks like its time to get that D7000 after all!" LOL

It can swivel so you can hold the camera overhead and see what the camera sees. You can also swivel it face up, so you can put the camera on the ground and not have to lie down with it to take a low shot.

A nice feature of that screen is that it can be turned inward, so the screen is completely protected. If you don't want to check the LCD after each shot, you could use it like that all day.
