I use the Orion thin off axis guider, and it does not interfere with the sensor of either of my cameras. Normally I arrange it so that the guider is directly underneath the main camera body. The biggest issue with an OAG is having the two cameras in parallax, after trying multiple times to gain focus while looking at the output images, I decided to just sit down and do the math and work it out with a set of calipers. This got me really close then the fine tuning was easier. One lesson I learned was to make notations, and mark the focus extensions to facilitate the next imaging session.

I also have a couple of refractors to use as guide scopes, but with my AT6RC it brings me over, what I think is appropriate, the load capacity to gain clean images. I recently have been trying to work out the intricacies of guiding. Last night was my first successful evening using all the equipment without any major hangups. I was able to get 5min subs without any trailing, sadly I had forgotten to list the drive in which to save the images so all 6 hours were lost. Tonight I am trying different lengths of exposures, of up to 15 minutes, and if it works ok I will have better hope of using my narrowband filters with my D800e without having to remove its hot filter.

One tip is program your PEC so that your guider does not have to fight your inherent periodic error. With my AVX my average PE was 12.6. I took 6 recording of my index's PE, averaged them together then reloaded them back into the hand controller. Now I just have to remember to hit the playback option before imaging.

Hopefully I'll have images to share tomorrow.

Thank You, Matthew, I will be watching closely as I am infatuated with auto-guiding, and CCD/CMOS imaging.
The OAG method is particularly intriguing to me. It appeals to my sense of logic as it is seeing pretty much what we are seeing looking in.
I've pulled the trigger on my gear and it's on the way.

One thing I am going to be looking at right away is seeing if I can use the CCD camera as a dual purpose application. Part of the write-up sez it can be used to auto guide as well as for imaging.
The Orion StarShoot G3 can also be used as a dedicated, high-performance, low-noise autoguider with ST-4 output built right in.
The clincher would be if the camera, and the AVX, can actually talk to each other. That might be the $64,000 question. It supposedly can... :?

So I'll be watching for any posts and advice offered. Thanks! :-D

yes the G3 will speak to the mount, I use the SSAG from Orion and the only real issues has been with the drivers that Orion packages with this particular camera, since it is basically a QHY5 but Orion deliberately crippled their version by not allowing image/video saves and only strictly allows the auto guiding functions.

Thanks for your patience.
Thanks for your advice.
And Thank You for the warm Welcome. :-D

I'm sure I will have a lot of questions for you. :?
Oh lucky you.

You've learned everything you can from the the real blind mouse. :P
Glad to help anytime Sonny.
