Strange Spider Looking

I got out in the woods yesterday and there was not many bugs to shoot. So I spend quite a while trying to shoot a Hover Fly or at least that what I think it was. Then, when I finished I looked down and saw a spider so small I almost missed him. So I knelt down and took a shot. Upon enlarging the image it looked like he was watching me, but I'm not sure if that is in fact his eyes.

Hover Fly - I think.

nice job. I like how the colors work together, the green background really makes that spider pop.

Thanks for taking a look and letting me know these are fangs, they sure looked like eyes.

They may not be fangs. They just looked like they were to me at first but now I'm thinking pedipalps? Douglass?
You might post it on bugguide. They are looking for ventral images & I bet they can ID that one, especially if you have a photo from another angle. My guess is that it's an orchard spider. Leucauge

Your spider is an Orchard Orb Weaver, the reason he looks odd is that they hang upside down on their webs, you actually shot his underside, if you look closely you can see the barrel shaped abdomen that is colored much like a watermelon that forms the bulk of his body.

Thanks for letting me know what he is and why he looked odd. Very interesting information.

Correct on both observations! This is a male Orchard orbweaver (Leucauge venusta). The pedipalps are used to transfer sperm to the female's reproductive receptacle, but then he must escape before becoming dinner.
