To use UV Filter or Not

I saw a discussion earlier on using a UV filter on a lens and whether it affects the image or not. The following two photos were shot with the following specs: Canon T4i, Tokina 150-600 mm zoom at 600 mm. Identical exposures 1/125 sec at f6.3. Tripod mounted, remote shutter release. Cropped in CS6. The first one has a Sigma DG UV filter on and the second is without the filter. No camera raw or photoshop adjustments Interesting results

Second shot appears to be a little sharper to me

I will just say take them both out in bright Sun and do a little shooting. I sold all of mine on ebay after I learned it gave my shots streaks of light across them. Now I just use the shade to keep that from happening and it protects the glass too..

The last cheap filter I ever purchased was a CPL from Fry's Electronics.... The captured images would have been better through a Coke bottle bottom generously smeared with Vasoline.

That filter taught me a lesson. You usually get what you pay for!

Well there is a reason to use a specific filter sometimes .......one has to know what they are doing and looking for though....I saw one person here mention CPL filter....the subject here is UV filter ......Oh well! :XD:  8-)

What was interesting to me is the extra detail without the filter and the reflections of the fence that show up on the first one

My comment about having used a CPL filter was to point out that a cheap filter of ANY type will destroy the image you are attempting to capture.

The CPL applied to my case not the OP's case.

Still ANY filter is a piece of glass or forbid, plastic, that you are going to filter your image through.

I choose to use NONE; CPL or UV.

I'm with the rest, took all of mine off and rely on lens hoods for my safety net.

Yes, they are different, but I like the look of the fence in the first one. On a tripod with a remote release removes any shaking, but I'd like to see several different comparison shots of a flat subject. (Not by the poster - just in general) Having something in the background can confuse the sharpness/focus issue, at least for me.

Putting a filter in front of a lens will seldom improve the image, but I'd no more go out without a clear filter on my lenses than I'd drive without a seat belt. I usually remove the filter to take shots. They're held on magnetically, so it's quick and easy.
