I am planning a trip to Maine for August. I'm specifically interested in photographing lighthouses. Will fly into Portland and will have a week to spend there. Do any of you have advice for picturesque opportunities? A caveat, we are in our mid to late 70's, but without limitations except for stamina.
Years ago, 1964, I took shots of East Quoddy Point light and Bass Harbor light. Several years ago, I took out the old slides from 1964, massaged them with Photoshop Elements and have them in our home office. Thinking of adding to them.

Once you know where the lighthouses are and have decided which ones you want to shoot, aim for sunrise/sunset times, when the light is best and the crowds are smaller. Bring a tripod and some kind of folding chair, drinks, snacks. You might be able to get two lighthouses shot AM and PM, depending where they're located, but don't push it.

I've been watching DVDs by Joel Sartore (Nat Geo), and he emphasizes taking your time and getting lots of shots around sunrise and sunset. I hope you post some when you return.

Plan ahead.

First visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lighthouses_in_Maine

Then visit google maps and create a Google MyMap and pin all 57 lighthouses in Maine on the map. You can include stock photos on the pins. Once you have them all pinned you can choose the most photogenic and create an itinerary to visit them. Fifty-seven isn't a lot of pins, I'm doing the same project for Great Lakes lighthouses and Lake Michigan alone has over 100 sites. You might use an app like light LighTrac to determine the best times to photograph them. SunRise Clock will give you sunrise times for dramatic shots and I've seen night pictures of lighthouses which are remarkable.

Check the local listings and rent a helicopter for an hour or two. You will get shots of lighthouses that most others never see. Have fun.

Thank you Jerry. I plan on early morning shooting. It's lonely because my bride(of 54 years) does not like to go with me that early.

Thank you Dave. Was in that area in 1964 and again in 1994. Beautiful country.

I think a helicopter is a little rich for me. A great idea though.

In the Bass Harbor area, on the way to Southwest Harbor, there are two small lakes, Echo Lake and Long Pond, that are very picturesque. Both have parking a few steps from the shoreline and easy hiking trails around the perimeter. I've taken some nice photos there.

Pat has given you the key with this link. I spent two days in Maine a couple of year back just photographing lighthouses by using lighthouse friends as my info source. Print out the pages of the lights you plan on visiting placing them in order and plan out your trip that way. You should have a GPS and a good map book. I also have two words of advise, Lobster Rolls! If you have a smart phone there are also several lighthouse apps that include directions and link right into the phones map/GPS app.

A much less expensive option is to rent a boat in Portland Harbour and shoot the lighthouses from the water. We did that a few years back. We took a schooner around the bay...it was also supposed to go out along the ocean, but the water became too rough. We went in May and their season had not started yet. We had our choice of private cruises. Just another thought.
