I have a beautiful Canon 24-70L f1:2.8 that has a Vivitar UV filter stuck on it!
It looks like it's on crooked. How do I get it off?

It looks like it's up on the right

stretch a rubberband around outside of the filter and unscrew it.

You'll have to even out the filter. I did this one time:

Take a kitchen pairing knife, or any THIN bladed knife and gently pry the opposite side of the filter up until you hear it "pop"or "click". The filter will then be straight and you'll be able unscrew it with ease.

TINY, TINY squirt of WD40, use the snorkel tube, into the threads, let it sit and migrate down the threads, warm lens barrel with hand, stay away from filter rim, now try with rubber band, or better a filter wrench, rubber jar opener might even work, Bob.

Thanks to you all. I GOT IT OFF!! YEAH!!
Used a rubber top remover grip and pressed on the top but not on the sides so as to turn it off instead of squeezing hard and deforming the frame. It worked! Will get a lens hood instead...

You got no choice but force to turn it with help with a pair of rubber glove. If it's still not loosen up, give up the cheap Vivitar filter, try to unscrew the retainer ring for the glass of the filter, then remove the glass, now you can try to squeeze the filter (without the glass already) rim and turn it, it will come off. If not, last resort is use a pair of pliers to force it out, watch the front glass of the lens. Hopefully you don't need the pliers! Good Luck!

Good deal, lens hoods are better all around.

Another technique - last resort. Using a hack saw, cut through the filter ring. That will relieve the pressure.

 I think I'd use penetrating oil, but this is the best way and don't forget to clean up the oil when you finish. I put a very small drop of light machine oil on the threads before I attach the filter.

Good to hear you got it off.

If a filter gets stuck again, another technique is to get one of those freezer gel packs out of the freezer and hold it against the filter. That will chill it a bit and maybe shrink it enough that it will loosen. Then while it's cold use the rubber top remover grip.

PS: if you decide on the WD40 route, most WD40 comes in a spray can. It's really really tough to get just a tiny bit out of it. Spray just a bit into a bottle cap, then stick a toothpick into the oil and you can place just a drop where you want it without having the spray get onto the filter or lens coating or somewhere else you don't want it to go.
