This is an unknown bug to me. It resembles a baby grasshopper from the back legs but nothing else looks grass hopperish to me. I am sure the experts on the Macro forum can identify it for me.
Dennis
No idea but you did good.
Most likely a very young Fork-tailed Bush katydid (Scudderia furcata).

Thanks, Douglass. So far he is just hanging around by himself on the milkweed plant as you can see. You are saying he will probably grow up to be a katydid? Is that a type of grasshopper? Will he still have the spikes growing out all over him or do they get covered up with something? I have never seen one before. I don't know if I have even seen a katydid before. You know, sheltered life and all.

Thanks for taking a look. Yes, he happened to stretch across as I took the shot. He wasn't very skittish until I bumped the flower he was on with the flash diffuser. Then he jumped off. Today he was back again and jumped on my finger.

Thank you very much. As long as he hangs around I will try to get a couple of shots. I would like to better what I did so far.
Another nice find Dennis. Whereas the spider was walking the tight rope, this one is doing athletics. Are you running a sports centre there. Sheltered life my foot!!

Thank you. Yes, my secret is out. I am running an athletic training camp for insects. Some are coming along very well now after endless minutes of training. For some of them it would seem that jumping far distances, running, secretive movements under leaves and yes, even flying is possible. Do not, I repeat, do NOT let the government find out. I am sure they would shut me down and imprison me.
As for the sheltered life, my mom tried to shelter her three boys from the harder parts of life but unfortunately she failed in that endeavor. Poor woman is gone now for many years but we still think of her with love in our hearts for the goodness she TRIED to bestow on the world.

Silly girl, they aren't stories but true accounts of my existence. I wish you lived closer and I could use my truck to help you move. Unfortunately that seems quite out of the question.
While I am thinking about it have you considered coming to California to photograph bugs with Douglass, Bill and me? Time is a wasting you know.

If all goes well we should be in England on the 28th. of this month and then the search for a new home begins. I will only have internet while we are at our son's home but hope to find some bugs to shoot.

In the meantime I think many of us would love to see photos of you and your family.
