Dumb law! So you don't have a right to defend yourself because an assailant was unaware that you had a weapon of defense just because it was concealed? You shouldn't need a permit to defend your life!

The law has nothing to do with defending yourself. It has to do with having a weapon hidden on your person. Two different things. In some places it is hardly legal to defend yourself within your own home. In Canada a few years ago a guy was charged with murder after shooting someone who was throwing firebombs at his house! Perhaps if you were carrying openly you would not even need to defend yourself.
But in answer to the original question, yes, it would most definitely fall into the concealed weapons category, so anyone who had one would require a concealed weapons permit, which in places like Florida and Texas, you get right along with your birth certificate. :D It is a 2015 version of the old cane-that-turns-out-to-be-a-derringer accessory.... although a higher caliber and with enough rounds to do the job more efficiently.

Florida here, I had to apply for my Carry Permit. But you may still be correct as I was born in NJ.

I am very familiar with the laws in Maine as I resided and worked up north and worked around Mt.Ketahdin for a few years. I also seen the moose killed as trophies, and maybe the hind quarter.

I was only joking, but in some states it is far easier than others. Many gun shows in Florida offer a 2-hour course on Florida law that is sufficient to get a permit. Other states at least like to see you do the NRA pistol course or equivalent, which I think is not a bad idea, unless someone can document training in the military or law enforcement. I worry about people carrying that have never spent much time on the range even.
