While I understand what you mean by the bucketful and 1 good image, this can be misunderstood as a spray and pray attitude. Those of us with a long film history were trained to be patient and wait for the best oportunity for the expected result, also with full manual cameras focusing was more demanding, not to mention the cost involved. In many ways "candid" images are a matter of planning, and not really random events, just saying.

Yes, those of
us with a long film history were trained to be patient and wait for the best opportunity for the expected result.
I don't really know how my comments could be mistaken for advocating spray and pray, I thought it sounded more like I was advocating the opposite.
I am advocating, instead of standing in the middle of the action, and spinning and turning trying to cover a 360 degree area, to position where the light is most favourable on your subject and camera angle, and you can cover nearly everyone with only 40 degree movement instead of 360 degrees.
In other words, I am advocating more planning than he is currently using.
So basically, yes, I agree with you. I do not know why you thought I was saying something else.

You don't have to capture everything, all at once.
The reality is - one very good shot, is worth a bucket full of ordinary shots.
There is one right spot to manage the light, and you can position yourself so that a large percentage of the people there are in the right light. It may not be easy, and you may not end up with as many shots, but you should end up with better ones.
I plan to take your advice at the next gathering and see how it works for me - thanks Lighthouse, I appreciate the suggestion.

Even though I am shooting digital now, I still do try and get my intended subject in the viewfinder and then wait for the "look" I'm hoping for. Sometimes I find myself holding the back button focus button for "eternity" to get just the right look, then snap off 2-3 images to freeze the look I want. Another good comment - thanks.

Didn't mean to say that you shoot with a spray and pray, technique but that the bucketfull for 1 image might be missunderstood by some as such.
