Put Old Cameras to a Good Use

A couple of years ago, I bought some old cameras on ebay with the intention of making them into a lamp. I finally got one finished. I wanted unusual cameras, so for this lamp I got an Argus C3, also known as the brick. This was the largest-selling 35mm camera for many years. Then I got a Zeiss Icon SLR, and finally a Russian TLR , special Olympics commemorative model.

I got a nice piece of oak, routed the edges, and drilled holes for 1/4" X 20 mounting bolts. I mounted the Russian TLR on a mini tripod, with holed drilled for the legs and JB Weld holding them in place.

I wanted something different for the lighting, so I put one or more little blue LEDs into each camera - shining out through the lenses. So, I have two plugs for this lamp - one for the LEDs and one for the main bulb. Both are plugged into the old computer control console I have on my desk. I can switch on the LEDs and main bulb independently.

The actual lamp in the rear is one I had around the house.

Before I make another lamp with the remaining old cameras, I want to see if I can make a more appropriate shade - something with photos on it.

Pictures are posted in the Photo Gallery.

Nice lamp. Does the light from the C3 form an image that you can change occasionally?

That makes it official Jerry, you have too much time on your hands! Lol!
The lamp does look neat though.

We all have too much time on our hands since we're looking at his project and commenting on it.

Thanks. Yes, I have a lot of time, but I also have a growing list of things I should be doing. This is more fun.

Nope. It's just the light shining out through the opening I made by removing shutter leaves. I suppose I could have a rotating disco ball type of thing, but that's beyond my interest and ability. :D

Absolutely brilliant Jerry. Now for your next project some of us would like to see a state of the art 50 megapixel DSLR created from some old light fittings, you may use incandescents or fluorescents or any combination thereof, please supply circuit diagrams and scale drawings so that we may all join in if successful.!!!!

50MP? Why would I want to copy Canon? I'm working on 100MP, made from a flip phone LCD.

Here's my progress so far.

Don't forget solid state! LED bulbs are becoming more common now and you can occasionally find them on sale at reasonable prices (considering the increased lifetime and decreased operational costs).

As my Fluorescent bulbs die, I'm replacing them with LEDs. "LED" is a lot easier to spell, too. :D
