Fooling around with a macro lens and flashlight

I was intrigued at a photo I saw that was taken using a long exposure and a flashlight to provide lighting that moved around the subject during the exposure. I tried it using a macro lens in a dark room using my college ring and some ammo. I think the effect works better using a larger subject, though. Will have to try that later.

Metallic surfaces will always reflect as hot, specular highlights, especially from a point light source.
Diffusing your light source will soften reflections by broadening your light pattern.

Good point! There are advantages to distinctive highlights, but I will try putting a kleenex or gauze over the light.

To soften and even your illumination, place your diffusing material between one to three inches from your light source.
