So here is what I did….. I bought this Tamron 2x tele-converter for my Nikon. Hey in was on sale 
Anyway, I tried one of these many years ago and was not happy because of the soft focus and I anticipated being disappointed again. Well I am not as disappointed as I thought I would be but not sure if I am actually happy about it. My intent was and prolly still is to do some birding and combining the tele-converter with my 70-300mm lens with my APS sensor D300s would pull me to a cool 900mm tele. Well that did not go as well as I had planned cause this thing does not let me auto focus with all of my lenses (just some). It seems to work with all my Nikon lenses and not so well with my Sigma’s or Tamron’s (huh go figure it’s like made by Tamron). I have no real problem with manual focus unless of course I am trying to focus quickly moving and changing direction thingy’s.
Anyway I am still working on it and have had some really good results with a variety of different lenses and things that aren’t moving. I have been watching some You Tube stuff. Seems like a lot of birders use these things with good results. I gonna just keep practicing. In the shot posted here please note that the figs are not moving but this is 900mm hand held and not sharp as a tack (not an understatement). Also this equipment is kinda heavy.
Anyway, comments and suggestions are welcome (as long as they don’t involve a tripod 

Good shot, excellent for hand held, although as you say, not tack sharp, just a tad soft..
