i wasnt out to take a great pic but decided to test myself as a beginner in the manual modes. i took my 3 lenses, 18 - 105, 55 - 200 and 50 prime and took the identical pics of flowers using the aperture as high as it goes and as low as it goes, then on a water sprinkler, the shutter speed as high and as low, also the same thing on each lens. remarkable! i learned a lot today! my question is on my 200 lens the bokah was remarkable! how come the other 2 lenses dont have as attractive bokah ? is it becasue of the focal length? i will include 1 pic from each lens shot at the lowest aperture the lens would go.
200 mm lens
105 lens

My assumption is the first picture is with the 200mm lens. You are closer to the bloom. Larger subject in frame and with that aperture the background will be blurrier. You will get others responding. I am just learning manual and different techniques myself. There is a great website to check out, ExpertPhotography.com. Really explains this situation well.
Take your test shots again and make sure you fill the frame with the flower the same on all lenses. In the 2 bottom shots, you were too far away from the subject to get the same effect as with the 200mm.
The longer lenses with wide open aperture will alway produce more out of focus backgrounds than shorter lenses. It also is a product of distance to subject. Try moving closer or farther away to get the same size image of the flower in the frame and the compare them to see what I mean.
#1 for sure ----subject is lost in 2 & 3
will try that. thanks everyone! i am learning alot!
you have to compare apples to apples. The tele brings you closer to the subject and if you stayed in the same place the 50 it is further away and the again the intermediate lens is in between. What you need to do to get a comparison is get a ladder and maintain the same angle and move the ladder closer with each lens until you fill the frame as in the first tele shot. With same amount of light, ap, speed, and ISO the shots should be about the same.
Y'all is the above correct?

Yup, the bokeh is still there in #2 and #3....it's the lens to subject distance that is fooling you.
