Nikon 24-85 f3.5-4.5 G ED IF for D7100 Thoughts

I stepped up and bought a refurbed D7100 and now out looking for an everyday lens for it. I thought it would be simple, however there are so many choices out there, it is a bit daunting.

I came across one of these lens used. I believe it is a FX lens which should work well with the D7100. It does not have VR and not sure if I need it.

Type of pictures I am inclined to take are street, buildings (they don't move), landscape and travel related. Historical sites and National Parks. I do use a monopod from time to time, maybe 25-35% of the time, and have increased the useage. Will use a tripod if I am setting up for a specific scene. I do carry while traveling on the bike or car, but more often than not it stays there.

I currently have a Tokina 11-16, 35 prime, Kit lens for a D5100 18-55. Have had my D5100 since 2012 with about 48,000 clicks on it.

I have borrowed a 55-200 lens from my daughter at least 5 to 6 times and only used it 2 times in those travels.

Budget wise I am willing to drop some dollars, if it is a long term solution.

Any thoughts on this lens or others if you want to throw your .02 in.

I have that lens mounted on my D800 and use it as my everyday lens choice for that camera presently. It was inexpensive but takes remarkably sharp photos and is lightweight. I seldom need the f2.8 faster lens so am perfectly happy with the 24-85. If I need more light I will raise the ISO a bit.

EDIT: Nikon makes a 16-85 3.5-5.6 G ED that I use on my D7000. It is also a sharp lens and is on my D7000 when I am not using the 105mm f2.8 on that camera.

I bought the lens for my F5 and now I use it on the Df. It's a cheap and a fine lens. However on the DX body it's not wide enough. A 17-55mm or so would be a better choice.

I agree about the use on DX bodies. I bought the VR version to use with my D7100 and was less than happy with the results. I just got a D810 and decided to try it and see if there was any improvement. The results were good enough to change my mind about selling it.

Thanks all for your advice. Your comments let me rethink my needs and ended up ordering Nikon 16-85 from KEH. First time ordering with KEH.

Again thanks
