going down to the obx, first night staying in Manteo, then 3 nights in Buxton. April 18-22. It's been 16 years since last time, Hatteras was on jacks ready to move. We'll take a day trip to Ocracoke. Any suggestions other than the obvious? Thanks!

When we go to OBX we always go north to Corolla. When in Manteo we catch the dolphin watch boat trips and go out on the 4x4 beach back north of Corolla for the wild horse sights.

I know there are 4x4 beaches down near Hatteras, but not sure about how far south the ponies are.

Bodie Island lighthouse was recently rebuilt a year or so ago, just south of Nags Head on 12.

You can catch air tours from Manteo airport - plane or helicopter as well.

Next to the airport is the state aquarium just outside of Manteo.

Well! since you are going that far you may as well come on down to Morehead City, the ride on the ferry from Ocracoke to Cedar Island is really nice. There a lot of wild horses on Shackleford Banks and Carrot Island which is in Beaufort. We are on what is call the Southern Outer Banks a part of the whole outer banks system of sand islands. Enjoy your trip.

I want to add a couple of places that are really interesting. There is a Native American museum in Hatteras Island and a Ship wreck museum where the ferry departs to Ocracoke. Both are worth the trip.

Thanks Scott, I thought about leaving by the Southern ferry route but didn't think of Cedar Island. I wouldn't mind getting down to Old Baldy, was there once and loved it. Thanks for the input. How does that ferry run this time of year?

I booked the ferry to Cedar Island, that will keep us closer to the coast longer. Once there, it's always hard to leave.

While you are in Buxton where the Cape Hatteras light is, there is a really nice trail there. The Buxton Woods Nature Trail. I takes about an hour and is well worth the time. As others have mentioned, there are lots of interesting museums along the way. On Ocracoke there are a lot of interesting places for such a small island Across from the National Park campground there is another nice trail. Picturesque harbor and lighthouse. You can't go in the lighthouse, but it is a nice photo opportunity. I have been exploring Ocracoke for 35 years and I keep discovering new things. Have a wonderful and safe trip.

Was in the Outer Banks couple years ago. Was able to get a few shots on the dolphin run and a the wild horses. Both were tough to get. They just wouldn't cooperate. :)

Have fun on your trip. I got myself the Lighthouse Passport where you can get the pages stamped at each lighthouse you visit. I then take a photo and reduce it to put along side the stamp.
