Anyone else been treated rudely by B&H when trying to get information about selling them a camera and (say) bonuses offered by manufacturers?

I ended up on the phone with a guy who kept acting like I was an idiot because I didn't see what he was seeing on their web site. No "look here/click there" helpfulness; just pure rudeness. I was really surprised, given all the good things that are said about b&h here, but maybe I was talking to the wrong side of the organization.

Perhaps the B&H representative was trying to avoid a bashing like Adorama recently received from one of our members trying to sell them their used gear:

Indeed. New Yorkers don't suffer fools well. Loved them the five years I lived in the City. ;)

You are on the west coast. B&H are on the east coast. NYC, to be specific. Two different worlds when it comes to doing business. Laid back vs rush, rush, rush. That's just the way it is. If a New Yorker thinks you don't know what you are doing and/or just wasting their time you can pretty much bet you will get treated rudely. Patience is not a virtue of NYC business. You think the treatment you claim you received from B&H is rude? Try dealing with the construction trades! Oh, BTW, B&H's trade-in policies and procedures are clearly stated on their website. If you had to deal with all the scam artists and thieves that call NYC home you might understand why they won't give a quote until they inspect the item. Smyrna, Ga it ain't!

I get that - but if they won't even give you a price quote, based on condition, it feels wrong to me. What happens if I ship them my gear... And a week later someone calls and offers $150 for a $1,000 lens, and I say no, but my lens is sitting somewhere in New York and I have to hope it comes back timely...

What any retailer buying used equipment would pay depends on a host of variables, the condition of the item you're selling not least among them. In the scenario you hypothesize above, if you decline the offered price, the item(s) you sent us would be packaged carefully and shipped back to you at our expense.

I have sold/traded equipment many times with B&H and never have had a problem or experienced rudeness. They will give you a tentative price, but will not give you a firm price until after the inspect what you want to sell them.

I have been told that B&H does not immediately fire recalcitrant employees, but first offers remedial training (I certainly hope this is correct).

We prefer not to terminate an employee if at all possible and are always eager to help that employee improve or relocate to a different position within the company.

Never! Ever! They are one of the most professional organizations I've ever dealt with. Your story tells me there is a misunderstanding on the part of one of you. Their website is pretty good about giving you an idea of what they may be willing to pay for used gear. But, they will never give a firm figure without first laying hands on the item. Nor would you.

Water under the bridge. I was just acutely irritated at the moment and it passed. In retrospect, wish I'd refrained from mentioning it.

I agree with this. When I was selling my older Nikon 70-200 I sent it to B&H for a quote. Their offer was $75 less than KEH quoted. I mentioned that to the fella who called. I was teetering on which way to go and told him KEH had offered $75 more but that I would sell to them as I had always enjoyed doing business with them and that they had always treated me well. About ten minutes later I received an email telling me that they had increased what they would pay me by $100 in consideration of my loyalty to them.
Seems loyalty and good words pays- both ways. ;)

Hmm. Are you suggesting that a customer who is unclear in his/her request for information deserves to be treated rudely?

Not at all. I'm suggesting that Bob might have perceived vague answers to vague questions as rudeness.

OK. I see your point and agree that could easily happen. That the BH guy was actually rude is equally plausible (everybody has a bad day from time to time) but would not comport with my long term experience with this company.

lets take into consideration that there are A LOT OF DUMB PEOPLE in the world.
I bet B&H gets 300 dumb customers (who need everything explained with apples) for every smart and knowledged customer.

That was not my experience with B&H. I called and asked what I could get for my old Canon film gear, The rep was helpful and gave me a quote over the phone. However it wasn't enough so I still have it. But that was my decision, no problem with the service.
