I use aperture three on my Mac and yesterday my white balance adjustment slider and pointer just disappeared. It is simply no longer there. All the others are but that is gone. Any ideas?

This is an Apple Feature.
Based on your usage patterns, Apple determined that you do not need those controls - and so removed them for you.

Close - with Apple it's by design. With Microsnot - it's a random unplanned happening over which they have no control - - :XD:

Some software does not allow white balance adjustments on JPG files. Could this be your situation?

I think, after all the foofarah, Bruce nailed it. There is no white balance adjustment available for a JPEG. the program is smart enough to know that and doesn't annoy you by letting you think there is.
