Back in the early 1990's I met a new friend and his Ol Lady. (Bikers term for our S.O., girls of the time.)
We hit it right off and became very close friends.
Then one night a call came, Juanita was gone.
She had a really hard life, except for her last 2 years after she met Paul.
She had a severe alcohol problem and that was why they had a "dry" house. He kept her well shielded from the bottle.
One night after the news he headed for bed, and she wanted to take one of her long hot baths.
He awoke around 4AM and she wasn't in bed. He walked through the house looking for her. On his way back down the hall he noticed the light under the hall bathroom door.
She had snuck a bottle of Vodka into the house and drank about half of it before she past out and slipped under the water. She drown.

When that call came in, I took a walk to try and absorb the bad news. Looking up at the sky, there was that smile.
Juanita's smile.
And every time the moon is smiling, I think of her.
I wrote a poem for them. I didn't know how to give it to him, so I just left it in his bedroom.
His daughter and he were cleaning out her effects, and he happened upon it. He sat down and read it. His daughter noticed he stopped and sat down beside him. They read it together.
He asked me to read it at her memorial.

So, for me, that's Juanita's Moon.
And now you know the rest of the story...
