I believed that I did not it the new topic option. Here is my post again. I am going to Hawaii in the next two weeks for 9 days and I am planning on renting a good lens to take. I have it down to two lens: the 24-120 F4 and the 24-70 F2.8. I am shooting with the D7000. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

I was trying to decide what to take on my Maui trip myself. I have decided, after some suggestions here, that I am renting a 18-300mm for my 7100. Even though I wanted to keep equipment to a minimum, I will also be taking a 10-24mm f3.5-4.5. And since it's so small, I'm throwing in the 50mm f1.4 in hopes of catching some Luau shots.

I also got some recommendations here http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-282930-1.html

The 24-120mm f4 has more reach and I assume the light levels in Hawaii are more than adequate for f4, so I would go with this one personally.

Enjoy your trip.

We were on Oahu for 10 days last Oct. My most used lenses were my 16-35 f/4 and 24-105 f/4. Driving, walking, and helicopter tours. Barely touched the 70-300. Took my 35mm f/1.4 to a night show only to find out that this one did not allow photography. (Polynesian Cultural Center). Check before you lug your gear to a show.

Last year we were there for a month and I used my 24/105 almost exclusively. Only exceptions were a whale watch out of Maui and surfers on the north shore of Oahu. Have a wonderful trip.

I took only my 18-200 VR ll, for ten days on Kauai, including a private 'doors off' helicopter trip. Can not have anything loose with the doors off, so no lens change is possible.

You can save yourself the hassle of carrying so much equipment. Everything here was shot on Oahu with my 7100 and the 18-300, it's the only lens I took:

I wonder if more people avoided these alleged shows that are meant to be cultural whether they might finally get that photographers might be part of the reason they draw people.

Contrary to my personal opinion before going, the Polynesian Cultural Center did provide an interesting day. It is owned by Brigham Young University of Utah. The Hawaii campus is next door. All the staff and performers are students from the various Pacific islands. There is a definite "missionary" aspect to it on behalf of the Morman Church was my impression. In addition to their student duties the kids work there on a regular schedule. For free, I was told. I think it is a good bet that the University keeps tight control of anything financial. If you can take your own photos you won't be buying their brochures. I found the visit interesting and worthwhile but was somewhat put off by the missionary overtones.

With all due respect my friend, once money is introduced, motives frequently change course.

Been to the Polynesian culture center a couple of time, last time being last year and only restriction on photography was no flash allowed, which can be a problem at the night time shows. used mostly the 24-70 lens

Then their policy changed either before or after you were there. We were front row center with my 6D and 35mm f/1.4. Didn't even bring a flash, since I assumed that none would be allowed. Counting on position and a fast lens to get my shots. Before the show started they announce "No photography", not "No flash photography". This was in Oct of '14.
