Reverse Mounting not working

I bought a reverse mounting ring to mount my 135mm manual lens onto my camera. This is a pre-set lens and works well with extension tubes.
However, so far, no matter where I set the focus, I can not seem to get anything in focus when this lens is reverse mounted. (yes, extension tubes are removed) I have tried just moving something in front of it, in and out by hand, trying to find a focus point, but so far nothing.

The rear lens is set towards the inside more than an inch. . .dunno if this matters or not.

Can anybody shed some light on this?
Thanks,
Inga

I wonder if your focal point is inside the recessed portion of the lens. Carefully insert something such as a Q-tip into that area and see if it comes into focus.

I have never tried reversing a 135mm lens, nor one that the rear element is recessed some distance.

Nope. I put something all the way up to the glass inside, and I get something, but still no cigar. Maybe this only works for normal to wide angle lenses.

Do you have any other lens that you can try this on?

I just tried my 135mm in reverse and you are right - it doesn't work. Put a 50mm on the camera and the results were very sharp.

I'm not 100% certain but, 135mm may be too long for reversing. I'm only aware of the usual 28mm or 50mm reversed. I do know the magnification of a reversed 28mm is much greater than a 50mm.

Here's a little info on that.... http://primalshutter.com/blog/lens-reversing-technique/

Keep us posted on how it goes.

You should be asking your macro questions in the Macro Forum, because we have several photographers quite familiar with this technique. In fact, one wrote this thread:

When reverse mounting a lens, the focus ring usually has very little effect. Focus is normally achieved by moving the while camera closer or further away from the subject.

My reversing ring will not work with lenses over 75 mm.
The lens length compatability were in the small paper manual that came with the reversing ring.

Right.
And I guess I learn right quick that you can only reverse lenses close to normal to wide range. Good thing the rings from China cost very little to experiment with (smile)...also that I was told about the other forums here.
Thanks, y'all!
