What causes those dreaded dead pixels on tv's & monitors?

I have had 2 monitors get large black spots starting in the right bottom corner. They started small & kept getting larger with fine lines running upward. The spots started out purple, then became black. My brother has had the same thing happen to his tv.(led screen) I just noticed the same thing has happened to our tv. There are also blue lines running across the top. Is there a way to prevent this or is this just the way the manufacturers of led screens can sell more products?
Never had this happen with the older analog tv screens.

Oddly, these things usually happen after the warranty period has ended.

different type of flat screen tech is out there but many are mechanical - some have a twisting crystal structure along with the backlight. when current is applied to the crystal it untwists and light is allowed to pass and when they're all twisting and un-twisting as intended you see the image you expect to see. If the crystal wears out you get a dead pixel or possibly a hot pixel than never shuts off.

If the circuits wear out you could loose a region of the screen that's no longer getting signals to untwist (or twist) - you then see a dead line or maybe a square depending on how the things designed.

We didn't get an extended warranty. :( Guess I'll just junk this tv & get another one. Problem is, I don't know how to go about getting a good one. This was not a cheapy. It hasn't even been turned on in almost a year. It wasn't ridden hard & put up wet, so's to speak. It's an LG about 5 years old.

Thanks for the very informative link, however, I still don't know what kind of tv I should get to replace this one. I don't suppose there is any way to "fix" it?

I've not heard of any service that can fix the display short of replacing the LCD panel but that is likely more expensive than buying a new complete unit...

I've had good luck with the Black Friday specials. I got a 42" Toshiba for $170 at Best Buy 3 or 4 BF's ago and a 50" for $250 from WalMart 2 BF's ago which gets used by my son and all his gamer friends quite a bit - no clue what brand it is, not a big name. An X-Box or Playstation make for great entertainment centers as well.

I don't bother with "Smart" TV's as I've got a Fire Stick and a laptop connected that work just fine.

Before I retired I did demos in Walmart. Black Friday was a big day for us demo workers & I spent most of the time just trying to stay out of the way. I saw people knocked down & fights would break out. I was giving out those little 2 ounce bottles of energy drinks to people camped out in the isles waiting for certain items to go on sale. It wasn't safe to get in the isles, so I would just toss a bottle baseball style to those wanting the drinks. This past BF the supervisor decided it was too dangerous to go to the store & he let us have that night off. I didn't miss it.
