Although the d3100 is Nikon's entry-level dSLR, it is a very good starting point. The 18-55mm is sharp for a kit lens. This combination can certainly help her learn how to be a photographer.

I bought my youngest son the equivalent a few years ago (the D40) - and it has served him well; he is now applying to art colleges.

If it is not supposed to be a surprise, let her hold the camera and decide if it "fits" her (reach all the controls, not too heavy, etc.)

I hear good things about the D3100, but don't have any knowledge about it. What I would like to address is the wedding. How far off is it? Will she have time to learn the camera? Is there going to be a backup shooter? And how good a friend is it? I never do photography for friends! I play with my camera at weddings and birthdays and other get to gathers. And give them the pictures I took. But only for fun. To important a day!

That is an excellent first DSLR for anyone. Price is good for the 2 lens kit too. Good luck to both of you!

Good price but you may want to find out how many "clicks" or how many shutter releases it has on it. If I were considering it I'd want to know.

I got my D3100 plus 18-55mm lens for $460 then bought a Tamron 70-300 lens for about $170. So you might find cheaper. But the big question mark is the lenses. They can make the price a good deal or a bad deal. In other words, you're paying more than I paid but that being said, the lenses may also be better than mine. It's doubtful but my point is I can't just say that because I paid less I get a better deal. You're lenses may be better for all we can say.

never heard of HHGREG, mightr want to check them out at resellersratings.com see if they are legit or is a scam outfit. for whatever reason there is a lot of scamers in interenet photography retailers. you probably could get either a better deal or more lenses for the bucks by looking used at keh.com you can trust these guys and they have good deals and put a 6 month warranty on their used stuff.

HHGregg is a new company springing up all over, to compete with Best Buy.

I have the D3100 and love it. One thing you may consider, instead of just a 200mm zoom why not see if they will substitute a 55-300mmVR zoom. I'm sure it'll be a few more dollars but it'll reach out much further.

My friend has the same kit you described and after trying my 300mmVR zoom he wishes he had gotten the 300.

Great camera though. Can't go wrong with it. It gets great reviews all over the net. Good Luck, Don

Ritz Camera had a combo D3100, 18-55,55-300 for $799.
In a shrewd marketing ploy Nikon didn't put AEB on the D3100. I'd pay the extra $200 or so and get the D5100.
AEB allows you to do HDR with different exposures.

I checked out HHGregg through BBB, (F) rating, reseller ratings.com (worse than average) and Measure up.com(couldn't find a good review on them there)

My advice go to KEH. They sell used and refurbished equipment have a fine record here on the Hedge Hog lots of people have bought cameras etc from them and not one is dissatisfied. They have a good return program that they honor. Stay away from HHGREGG. Just my opinion

They are also brick & mortar. We have one that is across the street from Best Buy - ironically enough in the store that used to be Circuit City.
