1:1 magnification. 4 Photos of the same trilobite but each photo has light coming from a different direction which reveals more detail. For more information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilobite

This is a great example of how much effect the direction/angle of light can have on a given subject.

Thanks

I like how the angle of light reveals detail hidden by shadows in the other shots. I wonder if stacking all the exposures would garner an all around sharper image?
BTW very cool shots of a very cool subject.
Thank, Matthew

That is a very instructional set of photos. I may make my own set to help people understand light direction.

Thanks for commenting. You asked an excellent question. I just took 2 photos of a highly textured surface and focus stacked them and the shadows that create depth to a photo and reveal detail in a photo are canceled out. The center photo is the stacked photo. Enjoy comparing them.

Well I appreciate you taking the time to experiment and to show all of us the results.
On a side note, do you collect these fossils yourself, and if so where do you find specimens of this caliber.

I purchased them when I was on vacation in lovely Arizona in 1992. I have never searched for fossils but I think it would be a great hobby. :-)

I used to hunt them. I always wanted to find a trilobite, but other than a few fragments, I don't think they have ever been found in Oregon. A good article by an old friend of mine:
