Can someone please explain to me why in all their engineering wisdom that there seem to be less and less viewfinders put into cameras. Do the people who design cameras only take pictures in a closet. It makes a hunt for a new piece of equipment frustrating and when you do find a camera that will work for you and you need to buy an add-on viewfinder it is almost as expensive as the camera itself. Pardon the rant I am getting a little irritated in seeing Moms or Dads at the beach with a towel over their head and the camera trying to take a photo of their kids dog or whatever

Yes, it is annoying. It used to be rare, but now it's the norm. Holding a camera at arms length is exactly what you want to do to get shaky shots.

In their defense, though, making the LCDs larger means cutting somewhere else. That little 3/4" viewfinder means that the LCD has to be 3/4" smaller. It also saves money, I'm sure, and that's always a big consideration. The original Sony RX100 had no viewfinder, but the III does, so I bought one.

Because it is the consumer knows no better. Hung up on smart phone and the camera looks like that so it must be good. Right?
I agree but not just viewing but holding the camera against the face, arms braced against the body is so much better that waving a camera 2 1/2 feet away on outstreched arms. How stupid it that?

The answer is simple. They are making what sells. I still see people who pay out some big bucks (saw someone with a FF Nikon body the other day, holding it out at arm's length shooting in live view, because that's what they are used to.) With people now growing up taking photos with their phones, and point and shoots, it is just the way it will continue to be.

Thankfully, as long as there is a market for DSLR's from enthusiasts and pros, they shouldn't go completely away. As you said, towel over the head and all that would be pretty difficult for someone shooting a sporting event.

I've had a few large format cameras that still had to use the towel to shade the ground glass for focusing, so really, the towel thing isn't new. I'm sure people from the really early days of photography complained about all these viewfinders, and wanted "their version" of live view on the ground glass.

"They make what sells" and "They all want to copy the 'Walmart model' and cater to the folks who always want to buy on the cheap."

My wife is always telling me to give my DSLR to someone to take a picture of us. 7 times out of 10 they hold the camera at arms length and stare at the blank screen waiting for something to happen. It takes a bit to get the concept of the viewfinder across.

I use a Nikon 1 V3 which has the add on viewfinder. It has to be removed to attach The Nikon 1 flash so I use my Hoodman with the elastic straps. That works really well.

Maybe we can start marketing professional hoods to wear while shooting
The hoods would have WIFI signal enhancers built into them . . .and maybe a little plastic blade on top that spins with the wind.

The upside is that even if you have the cheapest DSLR known to man, people will still ask you if you're a pro...

Seagull, simple answer, cell phones do not have view finders and the young would not know what they are. Another reason, a company can brag that their screen is 3.5 inches vs the std 3"vs an older 2.8",,,, the male "mine is bigger than yours" brag. Eye-view is not an area for such a brag.

I use a sun shield, also I have a Loupe for close work. Both are less than $20. Sony does have a view finder attachment, but it is more expensive than the camera!!

First of all, you are making fun of the older Jewish generation who still have their Bennies and wear them to church. Bad girl!! I wear mine because I am a Geek and my hair is gone and my head gets cold,,, humph. You do not even know what a hooped skirt is.. right?

Never wear a hood with built-in Wi-Fi. Your thoughts will be transmitted to the Web.

The flip screen was almost a deal breaker for me with the D750: One more thing I will never use to break.
