"Arctic Tern"

Members of the Lynn Camera Club were telling fellow photographers theirs a nice place to drive and photograph birds. It's not really my cup of tea, but I decided to go. I loaded my van with my Nikon equipment food and headed north to Cutler, ME about a 5 1/2 hour ride. You have to drive into Jones Port first to enter Cutler. The road is a dead end, I parked my van and slept in my sleeping bag.

At 6:00am I got up cleaned up ate and was ready to go by boat even further to Machias Seal Island. About an hour longer. Only 25 people at a time are aloud on the island. When there, we were taken by row boat a few at a time onto the island. There was a building where we could go and sit if you wanted too. The island was very small and there was about 7 photo blinds you could go into with small openings to photograph the birds. Arctic Terns and Puffins were there from Alaska to migrate. They appear every year, I do not know the best times one can go. I'm sure you birders can find out. Quite an experience indeed !

Presently I am trying to convert my Kodachrome 64 slides into my computer. I am only a beginer in computer technology. But, I do love it ! I did make this fine photo of a Arctic Tern landing on a small bird house roof with my Nikon f2 w/motor, and Nikkor 1000mm f11 lens. Film was Kodachrome 64 rated 80 ASA, light reading with Gossen hand held light meter. 250 at f11 on tripod. AP

Thank you Gary, for a observed response. It was my younger days of course and I loved doing it. To make a good capture is the challenge in photography as you know. There's many birds for bird lovers out their. They should take a chance and make a trip to "Machias Seal Island" and try to make some keeper photos. Birds from the wild living in the wild! They'll LOVE it! Thanks Gary for your kind response. AP

Thanks guts for your interest. Yes, I do have more but presently I cannot locate them. I'm working on transferring my Kodachromes into my MAC. It is time consuming for me.

I have some fine images with my LEICAS and Nikons. More will come for sure I just can't say when. Thanks for your interest GUTS ! AP

I posted on Youtube a few minutes of video from Mchias Seal Island. It is a great trip if the sea is calm - I was so fortunate to go on a day when the ocean was like glass all the way out. I had gone years before when the swells were 8 feet and that trip was no fun at all (and you could not get on to the island due to the swells).

You have a fine video - sb, glad you made it. My trip to the island was with Barna Norton in the 80s a fine gentleman indeed. I will eventually find all my slides, I have a terrible catalog system. Thanks sb for seeing your vidio made on a perfect day. AP

The first time I went was with Barna. He probably should not have taken us out - it was very rough! I guess for the downeast lobstermen it wasn't bad, but for us landlubbers it was awful! A few years ago when I went out of Cutler with Andrew Patterson it was awesome!

FYI for those who might want to make this trip:

Interestingly, the Arctic Terns have not been doing too well on the island - they had a number of nesting failures for several years - apparently last summer was more successful.

Thanks sb, I bookmarked your response. Appreciate your thought. THANK YOU AP.

sb - Maybe you can help me out. The following I posted this week. "NO PARKING - NUBBLE LIGHTHOUSE - ARCTIC TERN - ALL YOU NEED IS PROPS" and they do not get posted into PHOTO GALLERY so others can respond to my photography. Somebody in UHH is not posting my TITLES. Why is that sb ? Look at PHOTO GALLERY right now sb, I posted "NO PARKING" today and it's not there, either are the others. AP

It is always a mystery to me - my postings stay up about five minutes and then are no longer up, so I generally no longer bother to post anything. I don't know what the algorithm is for how long postings stay up.
