I can vouch for all this....

And these forewarning images don't even begin to approach the horror that is the Central and Eastern High desert parts of the state. Most of these scary images are from the Cascade Range of mountains, West to the Ocean. Everything East of the Three Sisters Wilderness Area is much more ugly.

Take the John Day River country for example... EEW!!

Be a good tourist and bring lots of money. It greens up the desert side to soften the ugliness (talking about Eastern and High Desert country)

Don't know what they call the West side the state, other than the side where People Rust.

But on the East Side, Central Oregon and East, we call it "Poverty with a View!!!!!!!!!"

It's always tough to decide whether to stay North of the Columbia, or South of the Columbia, so often it's just stay in the Gorge.

But youse guys have the rain forests of the Olympic Peninsula, The Grand Coulee region, and The San Juan Islands/Hood Canal. At Olympia you are only a few hours from all of it.

Grew up in Tri-Cities, spent a lot of time in Eastern Oregon and really love the open feeling there. In Olympia due to work which will end next year and thinking seriously of enduring the 'ugliness' permanently at that point in time.

Then again there's this little island with palm trees, breezes, sand, waves ... nyah, I'd get bored quickly.

We used to be amused while vacationing in Oregon to see bumper stickers on their cars reading "Welcome to Oregon, spend your money, then go home".

Ah Yes. The Tom McCall era if I remember right.

Followed shortly by the bumper sticker... "Don't Californicate Oregon"

About the same time wealthy East Coast parents were buying large plots of farm land in the Willamette Valley for their progeny to climb into big old blue school buses and navigate to Oregon, never to return. (on threat of selling the homestead, bus and all)

If you visit little towns like Aumsville, Mapleton, Scio, and Brownsville, you can still see the hillsides littered with those old blue buses and up on blocks. The engines were taken out to power old 4 foot blade circular sawmills, as the waves of hippies flowed in from the East. They toppled trees and resawed them for lumber. Some built log cabins. (Yes, I'm talking the 1960's here)

Pot farms arose and after 50 years we now have medicinal marijuana, illegal/legal marijuana and the right to "Die With Dignity".

And Bikers.. Oh the Bikers. Gypsy Jokers, Bikers for Christ, a few lost Hell's Angels, and more. Visit the Florence Rhododendron Festival on the Oregon Coast, which draws about half the Bikers in Oregon and quadruples the local population for a week.

Hmmmmm ... life!

That is very true..there once was a sign at the California border that said exactly that..no one paid any attention to it..and now that is why the town I live in just across the border is called "little California"

We need bumper stickers like that here in Rockport, TX. People keep wintering here then buying property and moving here full time. Our Small drinking village with a large fishing problem has just become an overpopulated mess.
