No matter if I shoot manual mode, shutter priority. When I download my photos on PC I have to brighten them, most of the time the shadow function takes care of it. am I missing some kind of setting on my camera--HELP!

Did you accidently set your under exposure to -(some number)? It is the +- button on top of the camera just to the outside rear of the shutter button. I sometimes get my finger on it and roll the front or rear know and change it to a +4 or -4 accidently and don't realize it until I am looking at my images. It should be at 0 unless you are intending to over or under expose (bracketing for instance).

I agree with David on this, I had a D7000 and this has happened to me.

Don't think its totally unexpected. I often have pictures which appear to look great on the LCD screen, but yet need some shadow work in PP.

I just checked the Camera and it's set on Zero, should I turn it up a couple of pluses, or is there something else I can do?

Does that camera have settings for "Natural colour", "Vivid Colour", etc? If so setting it to Vivid will likely brighten up your photos.

EDIT: I had a quick look at the manual. If you have the digital manual, do a search for the word "Vivid" - it shows up on a number of different pages.
If you don't have the digital manual, it's downloadable (gratis) from the Nikon website.

The big question is NOT how they look on your monitor, but how do they PRINT? It could be that you simply have the monitors brightness level set too low.
