In memory of a Loon.
Loons are uncommon in this area, but this loon spent the winter in a small patch of open water at a local lake. It was well known among local birders.
During the weekend Chambers Lake froze over solid for the first time this winter. On Monday there were several reports that the loon had been sighted on the ice in serious distress, bleeding from one eye and other wounds. It is suspected that I may have been attacked by a raptor while the lake was frozen.
The loon has not been seen since Monday. I visited the lake yesterday and for the first time in a couple of months did not see the loon.
I really enjoyed being able to see this beautiful bird every time I visited the lake through the winter. So I am posting these long range shots of this loon in its memory.
I had not posted these before as I had hoped to capture better closer shots of this bird. Unfortunately this will not happen and these are the best I have.
Loon - thanks for the memories - you are missed.
Hope he's okay, but doesn't sound promising. Beautiful bird, and nice shots even at a distance. Love hearing them.
They do have a beautiful song
Life in the wild can be harsh as your narrative points out. Thanks for sharing these with us!

I was sitting with my wife and friend Ken and his wife listening to the loons on Toddy Pond in Maine when someone said "What shall we call her?" I said "Dorna". She became "Dorna Loon".
