I see a great discount on the Canon G1X. Looking for a walk around camera that is good for street photography. Any opinions from owners? Also looking a Sony a6000 but I really don't need interchangeable lens ability. I must have eye level viewing and lowest noise for a $500. give or take a bit. I've always been a Nikon user but the G1X price is intriguing. Thanks.
The G1X II is a great camera - but does not compare to the larger sensor of the Sony .....you just need the right good lens on the Sony .....
I can't comment on the G1X but can on the G1X Mkii. I love mine. It's lownoise capability is intact to 6400ISO, with 3200+ being pretty clean. It's lens is very good, sharp, with excellent color rendition and contrast. I love the touchscreen. It's also very well built, good heft and weight and rugged. I prefer it to the LUMIX LZ 100, mainly because of features rather than picture quality, but I like the Canon's colors better too. The sensor is a 1.5" sensor, which is pretty large. It's a jewel of a compact camera.
IMO a better choice might be the very compact Canon G7X. A wide array of features and very impressive stats. That said, the G7X has received surprisingly little press and, strangely, little marketing support from Canon itself. Still it might be worth a look.
I have this camera and it stays with me in my car at all times. I love everything about it and especially for street photography. Here are two images from this camera. The guys enjoying the beach walk taken at hip level. They never saw me taking the image. The other taken through the windshield of a car moving about 50 miles per hour.

Can anyone comment on the Canon G16? It consistently gets very high reviews, has a lower purchase price than the G-1X-II or equivalent Sony, and is heir to a very reliable model lineage.

A photographer at my local camera shop took pictures of the same subjects, at the same time, with 5 different manufacturers' cameras that were all comparably priced. He then made prints at 5x7 and 11x14 (or thereabouts). He did this to determine which camera actually made the best looking, most appealing photos. The G16 won. (The G1X and G1X II were not included in this mix). :-D

Thanks for replying. Amazon has many user reviews of the G16, G1X and G1X II with no real edge given to either the G16 or G1X series. All these models get a high 4.5+ rating (with 5 the highest). The G1X may have more upscale features, but the end result (high quality images) seems to be the same for all these models.
The slowest. Camera I have ever owned

Which camera is the "slowest"?

It may not be the fastest camera out there, but it makes very good pictures. As far as advanced point-and-shoots go, it's got average operational speed, well-above-average lens speed. It's touchscreen really makes it a winner for a high-quality non-ILC camera. If Canon could put that large sensor, a Digic 6 and that excellent lens into a smaller body with an articulating touchscreen, it would be even more impressive. I give it two thumbs up.

I have a G15 and have always been very impressed with the image quality and the features, particularly for the price. The downsides are that the viewfinder is useless (which isn't a major concern as I find a camera that size is easier to shoot with using the LCD screen) and it is very slow. Slow to start up, major shutter lag, and slow shots per second. Not at all a good action camera, but otherwise fantastic in my opinion.
