If you don't have keywords set up, you can at least narrow your search by pressing the backslash key in the Library Module and filter the images by date, camera model, and lens used. I find that very helpful at times.

LR has several ways to search, but they all require that you give it the information when you import or edit the photos.

Keywords are what I use. They're probably the most flexible. You can look for combinations of keywords. If you haven't been putting keywords on your photos, start now.

You can filter your photos by metadata (camera model, date of capture, even things like lens used or aperture or ISO). I don't find that particularly useful because (1) I don't have different cameras I use and (2) even if I did, I probably wouldn't remember which camera I used or the date I took a picture (but some people have a better memory than I do).

You can give your photos a color label or a numeric rating or a combination of both.

You can flag the photos to pick one or reject one. You can look at all the images you picked, all you rejected, or all without a flag.

All these possibilities (except some of the metadata) require that you put a flag, label, rating, or keywords on your image. The best time to do that is when you import it into LR. But you can do it at any time if you want to go through your whole catalog and add things.

I understand your frustration,

1.Go to "Library" mode in LR.

2.Click on "View" in the Tool bar at the top of your screen (i.e. Lightroom, File, Edit, Library, Photo, Metadata, View, Window, Help).

3.Click on Grid and you should notice a new line showing up in the top middle of your LR screen. i.e. Library Filter: Text, Attribute, Metadata, none.... Custom Filter.

4. Now you can create a search. Click on "Text" and type in the name of the photo you want to find in the search field.

5.Click on "Attribute" to search for pictures you have previously rated by colour, flag or Star system.

6. If you have inserted Key Words/Tags into the Metadata then I believe you can search by clicking on the Metadata and adding a key word to search. You can even sort your search taken by certain lenses of camera.

I do not pretend to be an expert but if you do what I said I think you can at least have a starting point doing searches.

For the longest time I was looking for "Find" or a "Go To" icon but last week I had somebody show me and it is pretty simple ONCE you have a starting point.

I hope I have given you that starting point.
