Nikon Processor question.

The Nikon D5100 uses an Expeed 2 processor, the D5200 has Expeed 3, D5300 & D5500 use a brand new Expeed 4.
How important is the processor? What exactly the processor is responsible for?
Let’s say I want to move from 16mpx (D5100) to 24 mpx because I crop often, should I choose D5300 over D5200 just because of the newer processor? Don’t need GPS or WiFi.
Thank you.

Thank you for the link.
It says about Expeed 4- "improved contrast detection autofocus and live preview autofocus. It includes all of the features of the Expeed 3 (FR) and older versions of Expeed, plus it consumes less power". It sounds good.
I wanted to hear from somebody's experience, if he/she noticed a difference in image quality.

The processor really does not affect image quality, that is the sensor mainly. And the lens of course.

What you are looking for in the processor is the services such as auto focus, speed of processing the image files, ability to process captured data from the sensor well.

Latest is generally best because these functions evolve.

As you can see from my Signature, I have both the D5100 and the D5300.
The 5100 has a 16.1 MP sensor, the 5200 a 24.1, and the 5300 a 24.2 MP. Not much of a difference but when I was looking I decided I wanted the latest model.

Note: I never use the WiFi as it is supposed to eat up battery life. GPS is nice only you if need to know exactly where a picture was taken.

Thank you, I think this answers my question.

I perfectly happy with the IQ of the D5100, but I do crop a lot and think that 24mp will help with that.
So, do you recommend moving from d5100 to d5300 just for that?

Yes, definitely. They're practically the same so there's not much more to learn. I don't ever use my D5100 anymore but will when I need to switch between two lenses.

That's a very valid view.

The question then is what do you do with your images? If the only use is web and computer viewing, all of which have to be down sampled from even the D5100, then there is not a lot to be gained from the larger size images from a D5300.

If you print, and the larger you print the more significant it is, you'll make use of the larger pixel dimensions of the D5300.

I print occasionally, not much, but I understand your point, it makes sense, thank you.
