The train photo was fine as is, but after I ran it through Glow I definitely want to frame it!

I love Glow. Like you've shown here, it isn't just a plugin to make little electric-like squiggles on your photos. It can brighten an image just a bit and make it more interesting. I'm finding myself using it a lot.

Permission to post a processed version of the original that brings out the red without using glow?

Perhaps the detractors would feel more comfort with less spice as indicated in the Topaz Webinar ... Glow, by Blake Rudis. http://blog.topazlabs.com/webinars/

To call someone a "detractor" because they don't agree with your opinion comes off sounding a little pompous. The term "detractor" denotes a negative connotation, at least to me. Maybe that's because synonyms for "detractor" according to Thesaurus.com include: cynic, backbiter, critic, slanderer, defamer, censor, lampooner, and other uncomplimentary terms.

Your PP is fine. There is nothing wrong with artistic effects if you like them. You brought out the vivid red very nicely. It is a matter of taste whether you like the glow effects, which in my opinion makes everything look like wormwood.

The Shadow/highlight control in Elements or Photoshop can do wonders with high contrast images. Backlighting is one thing that it can improve considerably. It brought out the detail in the snow and improved the sky.

In PS you can go to the saturation control and choose the red channel, which is what I did to brighten up the red.

Thank you, ronwande. Very nice result.

My goal here was only to show the difference from the original (minimal pp) to the glow version. I have not taken any time to do much in depth pp on the actual original version, but I plan to do so soon.

I've been using Photoshop since version 7, and Elements in various versions for 3 years. Just downloaded the trial version of glow 2 days ago.

I love editing photos in PS and Elements, and do it very often. Guess I'll just stick to those for all the "purists" and post the "effects" versions elsewhere. :D

Happy editing in whichever program everyone uses

wtompkins,

I have no problem with folks who like the effects. In this case they worked quite well. I guess the bottom line is "To each his own". Just thought I'd indicate that you can get nice results without the artistic effect. :-)

I accept the thump on the head... point well taken... I agree with you, I had a gentle word in mind but could not spell it well enough to look up the word (what was the word???) perhaps I should have used the phrase... "don't like Glow"... Having watched the Webinar, my thought is that Topaz Glow is like Hot Sauce... right out of the bottle or too much added to the stew and it is yuck...too hot.

I was a Glow "detractor" to the N'th degree when I first saw it. BUT, watching the Webinar cited, I was convinced that it was a good spice for the right photo, not a main course, based on that Webinar... I bought it.

This is interesting because my opinion of it changed also when Blake showed how it could be used in a subtle and discerning manner. I haven't purchased it yet and may not for awhile but my opinion of it's usefulness has changed from the initial garish freaky results I first saw posted.
