Battery drain in Canon 60D

I have noticed that a new battery, fully charged will be depleted in 1-1/2 weeks with out the camera being turned on. I checked with an ohmmeter across the battery compartment terminals and discovered a 10,000 ohm reading with the camera turned off. Any one else having this problem ? The camera functions normally in all modes when turned on. Makes no difference with a lens on or off camera.

I had the same thing with a brand new Panasonic LX100 I got at Christmas. I scoured the web and found a couple others had the same issue.

B&H generously exchanged it for me and the "newer" one is not draining.

Out of all of the Canons we have, they all stay fully charged even if not used for weeks nor turned off.

I've had my 60D roughly 3 years. I have the original battery which holds it's charge for weeks.

Probably a bad battery. Get a new one, you should be fine.

It is a new battery, and the older battery does the same thing in this camera only. There should not be a resistance reading with the switch in the off position.

Could it be you need to pull the battery when the camera is in storage - I always do.

Yes, it is because you live in Florida - you have moisture penetration into the camera - there are several on line techniques for helping this. I set mine in a gently heated atmosphere with a fan blowing on it for 24 hours. If you still have problems, send it to Canon ( about $250) OR, just take the battery out when not in use and carry spare batteries.

I use my 60D almost every day for at least 15 or 20 shots. Even using it regularly, after a month I still have 25 or 30% battery life left. I've left it in the bag turned off, or even turned on in sleep mode, for a couple of weeks on a number of occasions over the last 4 years, and the battery only drains a few percent at most. Whether it's the battery or the camera I can't say, but that is definitely not normal.

Had the same problem at first... then I discovered that the GPS option was ON... even when the camera is in the bag and turned off, the GPS receiver was "hunting" for satellites. When I turned the GPS function off, the battery-drain problem went away...

There is no GPS option on a 60D.

Interesting. Mine is not an issue here in NJ. I didn't think about climate being the culprit.

Still, a good comment regarding GPS enabled Canon cameras !
