Looking for a wider lens than my 35-70mm.
I just got back from a vacation where I shot everything with my new/used 35-70 f/2.8 D Nikkor on my D7100. While it did an outstanding job, there were a few instances where I missed not having a wider angle lens (I used to use an 18-300 f/3.5-5.6 Nikkor but abandoned it for faster glass to shoot indoors without flash).
I did some research today and could use advice on whether a Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 D, or a Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 G would be the better choice. The 18-35mm would give me more "wide angle" choices, but at the expense of faster glass, while the 20mm would limit my "wide" choices but perform better in flashless light. Any suggestions about the usability of each lens will be appreciated. Thanks.
   If you are OK with non Nikon lenses the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 would be a very good choice.

I have, and use two lenses that would fill that gap. The Nikon 16-85mm DX lens. A very high quality lens with very little distortion on the low end (16). Reasonable price, around 600.00, it is one of the best Nikon DX lenses.
While not a very good low light lens it is light and small, a very good walk around lens.
The other choice that I use is the New Sigma Art series 18-35mm Constant 1.8 . Maybe the sharpest lens that I have. Not a lot of zoom, but a stunning lens. Just my two cents!

Hi Jerry - What camera are you going to use these lenses on? On my D610 I use the 24-85 f/2.8-4 D as my walkaround lens but I have also the 20 mm f/2.8 D for my wide angle and it works well for me. I also use the 20 mm on my DX body D7000 (acts like a 30 mm) and find it very good. Just my two cents worth. Good luck with you decisions.

Sigma Art 17-70 2.8-4 will solve your problem .....

I bought a Nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 from KEH and I really like the lens. I use it when shooting in confined spaces, like alleys and narrow streets.
To shoot indoors without flash you really need an f1.8. I'd go with the Sigma that was mentioned. My 50mm f1.8 really lights up, much more than my 2.8's.
Nikon 17-35 , 2.8. Super lens but heavy and pricey.
I use a Nikon fisheye AF 16mm f/2.8 D with my D7100 and correct the distortion in Photoshop. It gives a very wide perspective.
Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Since reading them and thinking more about what I'm looking for I've refined my thinking. First, I am looking only at FX lenses these days. Even though I shoot with a D7100 today, my next upgrade will be to a full frame camera. Second, I was so impressed with my purchases of the used Nikkor 35-70 f/2.8 and the Nikkor 80-200 f/2/8 lenses that I'm looking to save the same kind of money over purchasing new lenses. I've found both a used Nikkor 20 f/2.8 D, and a Nikkor 18-35 f/3.5-4.5 D each for around $400.
So, my choice is narrowing down to one of these two lenses. Anyone have a recommendation based on the IQ/quality of the glass for each of them? And I'm also a little concerned going back to a slower lens (f/3.5-4.5) vs the faster f/2.8 lens I was so pleased with on my 35-70mm D. Is there a clear winner here for church/museum/street shooting? I suspect not, but respect the opinions I've read here these past couple of months. Thanks.
I use the Nikon AF 20mm f/2.8D and a Nikon AF 35 mm f/2D on my FX cameras. Both are very good lens and reasonably priced for a good used one.
got my tokina 11-16 from bh last week it is really wide i love it and very fast motor

Thanks - I'm leaning towards the 20mm because it's a faster lens. My only concern is whether it's as sharp as the 18-35.
