Back when I was a young man ( a long time ago!), the petite, black, ground-dwelling bird with a white belly was referred to as a "snowbird". His real name was the SLATE COLORED JUNCO, a name that was changed in about 1983 to the present DARK EYED JUNCO. By any name, he is one of my favorite migratory birds.

I have tried to capture a few likenesses before they go home to raise their families.

Real Beauties Bob. Got any idea why some are slate colored and others brownish? I've seen both types and was wondering about that.

According to the Cornell web site, they collectively are described as having "extreme color variations". The males are usually more defined in coloration but both sexes frequently include varying shades of tan in their outfits. Thanks for stopping by and for your comments! Stay warm, my friend!

Love the whole set Bob! I love this little bird that never comes our way. I have to wait and see them on my travels. The shot with the corn is very very nice!

Very nice captures indeed!
I share your appreciation for these small friends, and remember the brooha when the name changed. My grandma never quit calling them snowbirds, experts be dammed! Lol!
I used to just admire snow birds and now I R one! (From my temporary St. Petersburg abode)

Great shots - especially the last one! I have never seen those birds before (it doesn't snow very often where I live) and it was really interesting getting to see them close up with such sharp detail. Thank you.

Bruce, as I grow older and older, my appreciation for the words and actions of our grandparents grows and grows. So many of the things they spoke of have been born out to be very true! Their education level might have been very small, but their observations were seemingly dead-on. I don't think anyone ever confused a "snowbird" for any other bird, but I'll bet that a "Junco" often has been". I'll let you get back out to the beach now! have a nice toasty weekend. Thanks for your comments!

Love your avatar and your site name...becomes obvious that you kind of like those guys!

We hold back some species as punishment for you for your abundance of exotic butterflies and birds! I very much appreciate your visit and your comments!
